Their job is to fight fires and good thing we have people willing to do that for us. Here are more times the firemen had to get resourceful.

My son in law is a firefighter. They get a lot of training in proficiency and risk management. For urban firefighters, I have no doubt there is a module on what to do when somebody has parked blocking the hydrant. I am sure those guys knew what they were going to do before their truck had come to a stop in the road.

Looks similar if they had tried to fish the hose under the car or through the windows, plus you have to consider that it is a CAR, modern cars only have about 4" of ground clearance in the middle, the 6-8" hose coupler probably wouldn't have fit under the car...

From what I see in the picture, there was no reason for it. Besides, from what I see nowadays, the FD is never in much of a hurry when they get on site. Probably have an hour long SAFETY meeting first.

And yeah, my Mother shouldn't be driving, but YOU can tell her that.

Don't know too much about fighting fires do you?

I was thinking it would have done better if they opened the doors after breaking the windows.

I dont know if the car owner deserved that, but it was necessary and logical. Too bad.

There was probably a certain amount of satisfaction in busting the windows. :)

A standard 5-inch feeder hose contains approximately 1 gallon of water per foot of hose. That first 10 feet of hose needed to go from the hydrant through the car, including the additional tension from the bend was likely >100 pounds. The large diameter outlet, depending on the water main can flow from 500- >1,500 gallons per minute at 50-70psi. There was not enough clearance between the curb and the underside of car and the bend would be too great. Can't go over the car because the bend would be too great AND the roof would crease. Can't go around the car for the same reason.

Depending on jurisdiction and clearance, some departments will actually use their apparatus to shove the vehicle clear, but that wouldn't have been possible in this instance. LIFE SAFETY above all else comes first. Standard fire pumper only carries 500-1000 gallons of onboard water. That same pumper can flow water at a rate exceeding 1500 gallons per minute. The first engine arriving doesn't have time to search for another hydrant or wait for a second truck to lay from 400-500 feet away.

I think they should have used the leaky hose too.
These are probably same people that block other peoples driveways.

Based on the fogging of the car windows - they likely did (not on purpose), but that first length of hose gets pulled or dropped off the truck constantly so they develop small leaks. Small leaks under high flow rates though.

Just against thugs with badges. That's all. No need for it.

The world is jam packed with stupid people. Doesn't give someone with authority to bully or hurt them nor destroy their property.

I do not know how the great white north treats its citizens, but I do not think we have a LOT of thugs with badges in the USA.
