I have to ask, why are you on your 2nd one in 4 years?

I always lease, usually 24-36 months, pending the "sweet spot" on residual. :)

Its funny, I have a work colleague that is convinced that a Prius is the vehicle for me. He states that the interior space is better that my current CRV, is more comfortable and I'll nearly double my mileage. <snip>

If you even entertain a Prius look at a 2010 to 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI with emissions modification .
Great mileage, lot's of spunk and a generous warranty extension.

I had a 2009 and got from 40 to 47 MPG and you can pack a lot of stuff in w/ the back seats down (or out). And it drove like a sports car.

fried, sorry to offend you. Just a personal observance. I've had three 6.2L trucks, and still have the one in my avatar photo, and they are a constant battle to maintain and keep running. I've had the gamut of common nuisance issues: air bound due to fuel drain back, glow plug issues, cracked heads (though never a head gasket), failed balancers, starter issues, failed injection pumps, and corroded battery cables. Never a broken crank or block though. I want to love these trucks because they are diesel squarebodys, but in reality, I couldn't rely on one.

There was a 6.2L Blazer on CL a few weeks ago, and had my mind churning though. Its a weakness.

Ron - good to know about the Toyota. I think the current Highlander might be a nice option, and they can be found with a Hybrid system. Nice size.

Rangers have always been a nice little truck, but just too small to be comfortable for long drives. That's the biggest gripe I have with the CRV. Just need another 1.5" of leg room to be perfect.

I had a couple of regular cab short bed 4x4 F150s that I liked a lot. I was thinking that with a topper, that a new one with the 2.7 would be a good size and get decent mileage. Could I realistically get 25mpg on the highway with one? Thats only 2 mpg worse than the CRV.

Newbury - that's pretty interesting. Never thought of the Sportwagon. How is the room for taller people?

My 6.5 turbo diesel has been a good truck. 9-10 problems out of those truck are PCMs, injection pumps and cracked heads or automatic transmissions. Mine is older and is mechanical injection pump with no pcm and it hasn’t cracked a head and doesn’t have an automatic transmission. Sure it’s had a few problems an acceptable occurrence for a 30 year old truck but it’s never left me walking. That being said I’d never consider one for a 200 mile a day vehicle.

MPG pic below is a trip last fall down to the camp, good mix of 2-lane, freeway, rural hills of SE Ohio. No load, just me. Second pic is pulling the BX.

Yes, if you are a prudent driver, understand how turbo engines respond, a 2.7 F150 will yield incredible mileage. Mine is a '18 supercrew 4x4 w/3.55 gears, 2.7/10AT. I will typically average 21-23 in mixed driving, 24-26 freeway driving, and 15-18 pulling my BX on a 20' tandem flatbed. Really hard to complain about that. And the torque wave of the little 2.7 is incredible, just pulls & pulls. Truck is also so smooth & quiet, just amazing....NVH is better than most cars. Then click it into sport mode for some real fun! Yep, I love this truck! :D

I might throw in a suggestion I haven’t seen offered yet. You say you like the CRV, I have one too, and it is for my purposes, a fantastic auto. I do agree though, sometimes I could use a bit more room. My wife’s daily driver is a 2013 Toyota Highlander, and I think it is the best car we have ever owned, and we have had a lot of them. Both of theses cars have a bit under 100k on them, and have never had a thing go wrong in them.

The Highlander, has more storage, capable AWD function, better than the CRV, is heavier, quieter, and more comfortable on long trips. She consistently gets 20 mpg around town, and a bit better on the open road.
Another feature you might need is the security of having your tools and electronics locked up and out of the weather. I’m pretty sure this is a 300k car, and a good used model wouldn’t be excessively expensive, no where near a new diesel pu.

I own a newer F150 but not a 2.7. My understanding on the F150 forums is that the average 2.7 would not get 25 mpg on a regular basis. Go with a short bed regular cab 4x4, it might actually get that on a regular basis. Like all vehicles, you start getting above 60 or 65 mph, mileage falls off in a hurry. I took a long trip in my 5.0 once and was running 75 mph for a long stretch and getting over 25 mpg for a couple of hours, but that was with a strong tail wind.

I thought about suggesting the Jetta SportWagon as well, but I never owned one so I was hesitant. I did think about getting one when they first came out with the TDI and don't recall any space issues - I'm 6'2" with a 35" inseam and 220-230#, if that helps at all.

Zig, when most Zag......

I like wagons for light applications like this. Great mileage on that platform, and interior space meets and sometimes exceeds that of a CUV.
