This is not really a competitor to regular pickups. It's a small truck for small tasks. If it were priced right I'd buy one. The range would have to be in the 200+ mile range per charge with reasonable loads.

yea, is too bad power plants don't run on the hopes and dreams of greenies...

But all the cogeneration plants use natural gas, thats totally different :p

The rivian is techno geek kinda cool. Bed cameras that can actuate the alarm, engine compartment ( electric actuators on hood) is the trunk, tunnel storage behind cab (door is a step/seat), power tonneau cover, cable locks for your multi thousand dollar bike that needs a ride to go ride, etc.etc. I wont be getting one to tote my horse trailer or equipment around.

I would love to have a properly set up electric pickup; diesel engine running the generator, and a separate motor running each wheel. The biggest logistics would be to get the motors running in concert, especially on turns; yet under most conditions you would only need one anyways.

A separate motor at each wheel would be very hard to control in turns and on uneven traction surfaces as opposed to a separate motor driving a front and rear differential.

This has not been a problem for the number of electric wheel drive race cars that have been built. They sense the forces and steering input to vary the speed and torque of the wheels. Most notable is Honda's 1000HP NSX.

I think eventually EV's are the way of the future. But I'm surprised that none of the EV manufactures have gone the way of the Chevy Volt and offered an on-board generator for long distances. Wouldn't it make sense, even if it was an optional accessory? Maybe the status of a full EV depends on not having an ICE, I'm not sure.

Moss - I believe most of the Tesla cars and the Rivian Truck/SUV have individual electric motors at each wheel.

Quadruple the power capacity? 400+ miles doesn't cut it for you? sheesh. Also the 70k price is not that far off from many new pickup sales. I'm watching this one with great interest.

Tesla model S has two motors. Model 3 has one motor. Model 3 all wheel drive has 2 motors. At least that's the way I read the specs.

we have a volt and love it, our other vehicle is a pick up. 1/2 ton 4 door 6.5 bed. it gets used to its capacity, either volume or weight at least once a month.

electrics are either about the same or better emissions wise depending on where you live and what powers your power plants. Coal is the way of the past. many coal plants have been converted to Natural gas which is cleaner than burning gasoline for your car.

After paying for our volt, its nearly free to own. the cost per mile is well below its competitors that are not plug in, are gas only. Cost about the same used as its competitors with the same features.

I hope they succeed as I will look at them when my gas truck is wore out. I would really love to have a VIA truck, but they are still fleet only. Having a 4x4 gas truck the same as what i have with the power capability would be awesome. it can run as a generator for the house, a 4x4 truck, jobsite power with 220 volt and still haul and tow.

The nature of an electric motor actually makes it easy to control when used at each wheel. Tesla uses one front and one rear motor. Cost wise, this is cheaper to manufacture.
