Hi Shaeff, are you back on deck yet? :D How was Hawaii? I imagine.
Hey Patrick! Yep, we are back, well rested, and ready to rock! That was a much needed vacation! Maui was excellent, everyone is so nice and very laid back, coming back to upstate NY was like a culture shock, everyone should take notes on the island mentality- they'd all be happier!

Haven't done much with my machine lately, been busy preparing for the holidays and whatnot. I did pick up another bucket for my loader though, paid only $100 for it! My current bucket is only 42" wide, good for some things, terrible for most others. New bucket is the same width- plan is to cut about 18" off each side and weld those sections to mine (maintaining the integrity of my current bucket) and I'll end up with about 6.5" wide when done. That's a springtime project.

I have also been busy modifying an old Fisher(?) snow plow off a truck to fit the 3pt hitch on the tractor. I'll make a thread about that shortly too. I have no pics right now because winter is just around the corner and I'm in a bit of a time crunch. If it stops raining I'll hopefully have it done tomorrow, just need to weld a bit and it's done!

Last update for the day as I don't have pics of the rest yet:

The original lift cylinder on my Massey 35 Utility was threaded for 1/2" studs. They're small, they broke, which is the whole reason I was able to get the tractor so cheap (no 3pt lift and it didn't run), looks to me like someone lifted something too heavy and bounced it on a bump. I can see on the axle housing where the 3pt lift arms contacted the axle. Big dent in the steel. So when I pulled it apart and the lift cylinder wasn't even attached to the top cover plate, I knew I needed to dig it all out and repair. The new lift cylinder I bought is drilled for 9/16" studs, much sturdier. They're only 1/16" of an inch larger, but they LOOK huge in comparison! I'll get a 1/2" vs 9/16" comparison shot next time I get to work on the machine. In any case, I had to drill out the top hydraulic cover plate on which the cylinder is mounted for the larger studs to fit. Pretty easy with a good drill bit, now I may need to just ream the holes a touch for an easier fit. Pics of that to follow:

1) finished up the hydraulic pump and reinstalled, this pic before I put the drive shaft and sheer collar back in.
2) Drilling the cover plate
3) same
4) same
5) same
6) last but not least, new hydraulic lift cylinder, fitted with new 9/16" studs. I still have to install the piston/rings.

I also degreased the inside of the cover plate (pic1) and hosed it all out. Much cleaner now. I removed the control levers as well because they're pretty rusty and the levers don't slide on their slides smoothly, although everything inside is free. More updates to follow, but probably not for a week!

For those of you just tuning in, thanks for reading. If anyone's got any suggestions, feel free to let me know! Also, depending on how many posts per page you've got the forum set to, there are new pics on the last page as well! Enjoy!

Hello
Did you have any problems with the new 9/16" hydraulic cylinder mounting studs being too long for the original lift cover

Hello
Did you have any problems with the new 9/16" hydraulic cylinder mounting studs being too long for the original lift cover

Hi there,

No, I made sure that the new studs were all the way screwed into the new lift cylinder. Once I got the lift cylinder in place (tapped it with a dead blow hammer) everything fit like a glove. My MF Utility is a later model, so I believe that it has the thicker lift cover. If you have an earlier model with the thin lift cover you *might* encounter an issue with the studs being too long. I don't see why shimming it with proper sized washers wouldn't fix that issue, though. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than myself can chime in with that information?

hello did you ever find where the spring came from I have the same issue and cannot figure out where it came from
barry

Well, life got in the way for a while and the tractor was on the back burner for a few months while I sorted out other issues. To sum up my issue from the last thread (which is way long at this point), I bought a MF35 Utility, got it all up and running except the rear hydraulics did not function. I came to the conclusion that the lift cylinder studs snapped off of the lift cover assembly. I finally got around to opening up the rear of the tractor on Saturday, and that's exactly what happened. I'm not sure whether it's due to water ingress, or the previous owner lifting something that was way to heavy and possibly bouncing it over a bump. The fact remains that the lift cylinder is indeed snapped off, all four studs. It otherwise seems to be in good condition.

I have the factory AGCO manuals, but one of the exploded diagrams is still leaving me with a question concerning the hydraulic pump. Considering how easy it was to remove the lift cover, I'm tempted to fix the lift cylinder and put it back together to see if it all functions, but wanted some opinions first.

Third picture below shows the innards of the tractor as seen from the rear. The lift cylinder was sitting on top of the main drive coupler, and the rock shaft was hanging down. In the upper right corner, all the way down in front of the hydraulic pump, I found a very long spring. It looks as long as the springs used for the lift/draft controls. I know there is a spring in the hydraulic pump down in that area as shown in the second picture I got from Google. This spring I found is easily 8-10" long. Is it likely that it came from the lower left side of the hydraulic pump picture?

I'll have to try and drill out the four broken studs, as the lift cylinder appears otherwise undamaged. I'd like to reuse it if possible. Aside from the usual o-rings here and there, is there anything else I should replace inside? Can I fill this thing with some diesel (to continue to flush the system) and run it with the lift cover off to see if the pump works? Without the stand pipe bolted in, I'm betting it would make a huge mess, right?

Thanks, all![/QUOTE]

just figured out i was not replying correct ... I have the same issue, found spring in bottom of case it is broke, and was exactly as you said kinda up and to the front right side as you sit on tractor, pump appears complete no parts broke off and levers above are all attached... did you figure out where it came from?
