Mahindra 4540
I asked this question over in the Mahindra section, but I'm not getting any response and my tractor is down until I figure this out -- so needing some help ASAP.

I'm setting up a hydraulic auger on my Mahindra 4540 Front End Loader and I have all the hoses and fittings for the new control valve, but I ran into one fitting that is different. This is the inlet hose that goes from the pump output to the input on the FEL control joystick. I think the control valve is a Besko model, but there is very little/no information out there on it and I can't figure out what fitting type/size I need.

Does anyone know what type of fitting is used on the Mahindra FEL control valve?

I do not have a good local hydraulic shop, so I have to order all this stuff online and shipping is killing me. I can't be playing the "see what works" game.

Here are a couple pictures to help...

Looks like JIC. Don't have a Mahindra so I don't know size. You should be able to find some sizing info online.

My guess would be #8 JIC which equals 3/4" SAE - NF thread. But guessing doesn't help you.

You really need some calipers and a thread gauge.

This might help.

Same thing he was told in the Mahindra section.....time to measure.

OP- a lot of local auto parts stores, truck repair shops etc have hydraulic parts. Hopefully their are local options to help you out.

This is just a general purpose field guide, does not apply to all
JIC # size/Wrench size
#4 - 9/16
#6 - 11/16
#8 - 7/8
#10 -1"
#12 - 1 1/4
#16 - 1 1/2
#20 - 2"
A picture of the other side would have helped too. Flat, flare, etc...

Are you putting the new control valve between the pump and the loader valve? Usually you add valves on the power beyond circuit off the loader valve.

"Are you putting the new control valve between the pump and the loader valve?"

I would be EXTREMELY cautious doing that - I found out the HARD way ($400 for a new pump) that some tractors incorporate the main system pressure relief in the LOADER VALVE - my first attempt at plumbing in a hydraulic sickle bar AHEAD of the loader valve ended up with the pump splitting in half when the sickle hit a really hard limb and stalled. Sickle now gets fed from its own valve AND pressure relief, AFTER the loader valve....

fitting size - if you're not sure even after checking wrench size, (as mentioned, this is not infallible) after you find a local supplier, buy just one (opposite sex from yours) adapter in the size you THINK is right, take it home and see if it screws into what's there - should cost somewhere between $1.50 and $4 to find out for sure... This could also be 30 degree flare fitting. I know that it what is on my Branson. Totally different thread size than JIC 37 degree flare

Sorry I missed your comment about no local hydraulics - maybe this will help

Oldnslo makes a good point,( look at JIC, compared to JIS several pages later) and (for 3/4" size, anyway) the two are only about .002" different male thread diameter, so even a digital caliper wouldn't guarantee which yours is - check out both in the above guide, the bigger difference is the angle. I would hold a small straight edge against the angled part of the male, and find a way to measure that angle (see pics in the chart) - there's a noticeable difference in how steep a 30* angle is when compared to 37*.

Best I can offer, HTH... Steve

(Looks like Ericm already linked the chart :=)
