I once knew a guy (created pension plans for foreign countries) that Panicked, and traded in a Brand New 76 (I Believe) FORD Elite, when the gas crunch hit and bought an ugly Toyota Corolla. Must have taken a beating. Yet he only drove a few miles to work, to the commuter station. I'm sure, he never recovered his money in fuel savings, AND drove an ugly uncomfortable car! I bet the hood on that elite was longer than the Toyota!

Not sure what math you're referring to. I did the math on energy saving, .

I meant most people do not calculate $/KWH and how much they are spending and cost of material. I get what you mean keeping them busy for 40 hours, in some ways you can't count that cost. Same with a big company, where if they weren't doing that would just be doing something else. Though at some point if other work is not getting done, it has a cost.

Many people fall for the idea that something is more energy efficient so I will save money by buying it. Most people can't do math. Let alone fractions.

Right they don't add up the miles, and the cost to purchase a new vehicle.

For many people buying a car just cause it is good in gas, may not be a money saver, if they already have a vehicle.

And, that guy was responsible for peoples pension plans. Bank of Nova Scotia. Kind of figures!

My Dad was/is the total opposite. Would never spend a cent to save money.

One factor that saves us even money than some is that as an industrial facility we also pay "Demand". This is a charge based on the maximum KW rate over a 15 minute period during the month (theoretically this accounts for the cost to install and maintain the infrastructure to deliver said KW).

In a normal month the Demand charge is as much as the KWhr Usage charge. We currently pay roughly $18/KW demand.

300 tubes at (40-18w) * $18 = roughly $120/mo or almost $1500/year.

Sometime back in the late '70s I saw a cartoon of a guy at at dealer looking at a shoebox "If you want economy, you've got to pay for it"...

I replaced all of my fluorescents and almost all of my incandescents with LED's and haven't looked back. No more buzzing, flickering, hard starting cold, finicky ballasts. A LOT less bulb changing. Use a lot less electricity too.

The Elite and anything with a V8 went begging... the Cuda, Trans Ams, big American Iron died on the vine...

The Honda CVCC was the car with waiting lists...

One of Dads friends nearly went to jail... he bought a Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser... a very nice car... the seller had switched the Air Cleaner cover from 455 to 350... Dad's friend didn't know until he went to buy tune up parts and nothing fit...

Never seen a guy so angry... really thought he was going to kill the seller...

Very true... I was able to shave some by staggering motor start loads... someone had everything set to start at 5 am... the surge was noticeable... a little planning was able to save some of the demand charge.

At my old job, we had off-peak electric... it cost cheaper at night. So we installed ice tanks, made ice at night when the rates were cheaper, and used the ice to cool both the air and some liquid cooled machinery during the day. It saved huge amounts of money.
