All the disposal sites around DFW are run by jazzaxes . In addition to price per ton, $20 surcharge for non-dump vehicle and $25 if you want "pull off". Operator drive's dozer to rear of trailer and you hook your chain to dozer for "pull off". Admittance refused if you are not tarped or improperly tarped. NO,you cannot adjust tarp in their lot, must leave and return. However, they will alow installation of tarp they sell for 3x price. Some ask patrons to show hard hats for everyone in vehicle. NO,your kid can't wait here while you unload. And on and on,something new every trip.
I would rather be whipped with a dead rabbit than go to the disposal sites around here.

Yeah, the dump people can get a little 'power trippy' sometimes.

I've done the following with a 1 ton truck with a dump box carrying sawdust. Safety police may yell, but what is general consensus?: Instead of messing with a dozen straps or bungees, and correct size tarp, I threw oversize tarp over load, then laid several logging chains around perimeter of dump box over and along edge of tarp. No air could get under it. Worked well.
At least my picture didn't end up on the other thread showing idiots carrying things. :D
Unsafe?
Too redneck?

Sounds just fine for a compact load like sawdust.

Doubt it would work on most things that go to the dump.

I haul mulch, dirt, stone etc. in my dump trailer. I but cheap mesh tarps at HF and secure them with bungies. The mesh tarps allow air to flow through them yet contain the load. If and when the grommets pul out I replace the tarp. I also bought the grommet kit HF sells and have repaired some old tarps. I usually get the 8'x16' for $30 less the 20% coupon. Never had wind get under and lift the tarp.

Search results for: 'mesh tarp'

Thanks for the link. I'll have to consider that mesh tarp.

I also do this for hauling gravel, etc. Heavy chains conform to the load pile, no air lifting the tarp. Jon

That really torques my converter!
County dumps that act like that are the reason people like to dump their trash on the dirt road to my place.

The dump should be really cheap or free for county residents.
It is not their business if my load is covered or not. That is the police or DOT job.

All they should be looking for is what you are dumping. Nothing hazardous, and put special items (paint, electronics, metals)in the proper area.

I bought a Mesh tarp for my 14' dump trailer . Hangs over the sides some depending on center height of load , Same for front and back . Rather than bungee's , I threaded rubber rope around entire perimeter of tarp . Then placed 2 of those plastic saw horses in the trailer to simulate a load height . Laid tarp over trailer . Looped rubber rope through all hooks till I got to the 2 ends of the rubber rope . Pulled a little tension on both ends and hooked them together . The excess ends I just tied in knots . Did mot want to cut it off in case I want to adjust tension depending on load height or lack of height . There are various connectors for rubber rope that allow you to adjust / slide excess , thus You can easily adjust tension without having a few hundred different bungee lengths . That is usually what tears out grommets , bungee length versus height of load . While it worked fine for one load , the next load may be higher with bungee's pulling even harder .
The rolling tarp systems are alright if load is pretty similar each time , otherwise it goes back to the bungee length / load height scenario .

I have a commercial tarp for my farm wagon. It's VERY heavy. I still use the procedure indicated by LOWCOUNTRY REBEL. Keeps the wind from getting under the tarp and pulling on the grommets. But with a farm wagon you never go very fast anyhow.

It works well when I park a tarped load in the farm wagon. Tie the front down and leave the wagon parked into the prevailing wind. The tarp doesn't get damaged and the load is still protected.

I bought a roller tarp kit for install on our PJ dump trailer (some pics on pg 4 of the thread on the wife's trailer: https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/trailers-transportation/376254-bought-wife-dump-trailer-4.html ) Although I bought it from a PJ dealer, the kit came from Buyer's Products. They have a lot of kits & parts. You can find a list of stuff here: Tarp Systems | Buyers Products There is probably more available than what is on the site if you call. A bunch of their stuff is listed on Amazon as well

A lot of what you mentioned has more to do with their insurance company than them. They charge more for a non-dump vehicle because you'll be onsite longer doing a manual unload. To do a pull off means you will be very close to their equipment. Insurance charges extra to cover them in those instances.

Insurance requires hard hats on many types of sites. Some won't allow anyone under 18 to be on the property. Many will only let the driver exit the vehicle while at the dump site.

On to the topic of tarping; many areas I've been in, cops will ticket you for having an untarped load of trash well before arriving at the dump. Some dumps even call and let the police know they're sending away an untarped load.

Frustrating things to deal with for sure. Keep in mind that every one of those “rules” is because of issues from problem customers they have to deal with. If your vehicle does not dump and you have to exit the vehicle then there’s a greater chance of injuries or other problems. Poor parenting allowing kids to run loose instead of being kept in the vehicle. Poorly prepared pull off loads resulting in damaged vehicles.

I do agree with the price issue. It should easy and be well worth it to take the time and trouble to go to the legal dump site. Instead it seems we are being penalized.

As posted above its all about the liability issues and the cost of dealing with those problems. Now the rest of us have to deal with the results of previous customers.
