Weird welding injury - wire puncture wound (minor)

I was MIG welding in an unusual position. I had just started the arc, my hand wobbled a bit, and the tip bounced off an adjacent (painted) steel surface, which drove the wire through my off-hand glove and into the side of my thumb. I'm pointing to it with the stinger in the attached photo. Minor injury to be sure, but sharing to save others the pain of in instantly cauterized wound.

That ring can cause serious injury .... in several ways!

The welding wire accident will probably never happen again. The ring is an accident waiting to happen.

Hurts like a muther doesn't it . Done that more than once in my career, on the plus side, it doesn't bleed.
Tell you what hurts worse is sitting on a stool tigging, you're done a bead where the tungsten is out quite a ways, nice and red and you lay the torch over your thigh and the lead bends enough that the tungsten burns into your lower leg. You end up with a nice, cauterized 1/8" diameter tapered hole burnt in your leg with a 1/2" diameter burnt ring around it...........Mike

Long ago I was doing some gas welding. Using a metal coat hanger as filler metal. Yes, it was crude but it worked. I didn't straighten out the hanger. It slipped off the welding contact area and the red hot end buried in my leg. It didn't really hurt for about a half hour. I still have a small purplish lump.

I've yet to be tagged while welding but I've had my share of grinding mishaps. Most recent was when my clear full face shield was AWOL. Just needed a little bit of work with knotted wire brush on 4.5 grinder so I put on safety goggles and went to it. A wire flew off and stuck into the bridge of my nose. Don't know which hurt worse,when it happened or when I pulled it out. Just a warning of what can happen when eyes are exposed.

When I was going to Pittsburgh Inst of Aeronautics in the 1990-1992 period we were learning welding for aircraft tubing and I took a welding rod that I was just welding with and wanted to re-position my left hand... I lifted my left thigh and dropped the tip of the red hot rod onto my Levis and repositioned my hand.... and realized that I couldn't pull the rod back. It melted into my thigh muscle and I had to walk to medical holding a foot or so of rod sticking out of my thigh and have it jerked out by medical. That SUCKED! I still have a little blotchy scar on my upper thigh.

I learned a lesson, one that I have never again repeated.

Guy at work ran mig wire into his arm and ended up in intensive care with an infection from it.
