Iseki GEAS 31
I'm looking for any help with a giant LEMON, I purchased from a crook in Washington State. I'm a firefighter living in Idaho, and about to hit my busy season. I bought a 1992 Iseki GEAS 31 with the E3CD motor. I had it off the trailer for and running for all of 15 minutes, before it experienced the "runaway diesel" phenomenon. This is a grey market Japan tractor, all the labels are in Japanese. I'm not sure if I can find a rebuild kit or replacement motor for this thing of if that is even what it needs. I got screwed by the dealer BIG TIME on this, basically told me it was operator error and no warranty work, etc. Needless to say I am pursuing legal action. If there is anyone who knows the low-down on these tractors, how to find a rebuild kit, what other motors maybe I could replace this with, or any real information, I would be grateful. I am up a certain creek on this thing, and I don't even know what a paddle is at this point.

Thanks

What did happen? Did it run on the oil or was it the injection pump? How long did it run?

I had it off-loaded from the transport trailer and it ran for about 15, maybe 20 minutes total. I have not done anything to it since then, other than load it back on the transport and wait for the State Attorney General, Federal Trade Commission, and others to respond to my formal complaints. i have no idea if it was an injector pump or bad rings. I idled at 1200 RPM (estimate) and was producing white/grey smoke at an idle. It experienced the runaway diesel under minor load, operating in 3rd gear at maybe 2000 RPM (probably less) when it ran away.

I would have to say it was running on oil, as there is oil covering the cowling panels on the outside of the motor, and the dipstick/checkstick for the oil level showed very low after this event

At least with Kubota Grey's, there is a US model equivalent (or close to it) that will cross to with parts. Perhaps it is similar with Iseki grey market machines. I have never had a diesel runaway, but don't they self destruct unless interrupted ? Did you get it shut down?
Might be easiest to find a used replacement engine or a parts tractor donor.
Busy season in Idaho? That must mean forestry firefighting. Tough work! I did 30 years in structural firefighting, retired now.
Be safe, and don't lose your mind over a tractor.
On edit, 50 pages of Iseki information here on TBN:

yeah, i 'm a wildland guy. 7 years until glorious retirement. So it didn't implode necesarrily, from what I've seen on the interwebs usually they do self destruct but this one did not. I was able to start, run, and experience the phenomenon a second time. I think it would start and run again... from what I've seen there are two ways to end the run away diesel, cut off air or wait for it to run out of oil. I'm in 20 grand on this sucker so I'm not giving up but it has increased my stress load significantly

So what were the symptoms?

Did it run out past WOT no matter the throttle position, or would it just not shut off?

Was the actual throttle lever on the side of the injection pump moving in both directions with the throttle pedal/lever?

How were you able to shut it off?

Looking at pictures on one for sale: https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/31603635/iseki-geas-25

It looks like it has a keyswitch to turn it on/off (using a shutoff solenoid) and cables from the hand and foot throttles.

Thus one of the cables could be sticking and keeping the pump at a higher RPM than you have selected, or the shut-off solenoid could be disconnected, broken, etc and not shutting the tractor off.

I'm in 20 grand on this sucker so I'm not giving up but it has increased my stress load significantly
Not trying to be rude, just trying to understand, how are you $20k into a 27 year old compact tractor that should run $8-10k?
Was it a package with other attachments?

For that kind of money, you could be within spitting distance of a similar sized brand new tractor.

Can you post some pictures of the tractor, especially the dash and some close-ups of the injection pump area?

I'll see if I can put it all together from your post with what happened... and see if the two line up.
Initially starting and running the tractor everything seemed fine.... though it blew a lot of white smoke at an idle, a lot of white smoke at idle. Before staring, I Checked the oil, it was in the operating range but on the low end. The tractor smoked pretty good at an idle (though I thought the idle was a bit high, ~1200-1500 RPM), the Hobbs shows 1100 hours by the way.
When it ran away, I was unable to successfully shut it off by turning the key, that did nothing... keep in mind this all occured while unloading where my road meets one of the major/ and only north-south Two lane highways in Idaho, so with log trucks and 18 wheelers whizzing by, my focus was really on not getting crushed. I did shut off the fuel valve, though that was really not a factor. The tractor did go WOT, no matter what throttle position, hand or foot throttle, and would not shut off by turning off the key which is all i could think to do at the time, Prior to that moment I had never heard or seen of the Runaway Diesel phenomenon. I have a video I took... but has a lot of colorful language that probably wouldn't be good to share on a forum. The handle idle/hand throttle was never used, though when it was not running I could see that the throttle linkage for both the foot pedal and the hand throttle both appeared to be functioning fine where they connect on the injection pump. Before going WOT, it would start and shut off with the key. After going through the Runaway and shutting off on it's own, I did let it cool, added oil (as it was now showing way low on the dipstick) and it started and ran and shut off with the key a couple more times before running away a second time.
As for the price, I did get one that has a enclosed cab, and it came with a 60" snowblower... i bought this thing over the internet, having visited the dealer once prior... I will never purchase something of this or any other nature like I did, I'm not a guy to go out and buy brand new things, everything i own; chainsaws, motorcycles, trucks, cars, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, etc... all used, I've never had an issue like this, also worth mentioning I supervise and maintain a Frieghtliner M2 buisness-class wild land fire truck with Kubota 3 cylinder auxillary pump that is in it's 8th year of service with no maintenance or mechanical issues, I have been a snowcat operator for 3 winters with Mercedes, Cat, Cummins, and LMC machines also grew up on an apple orchard with Ford, Masey and Ferrari Tractors among other equipment, it's not like i jumped on this thing like Yosemite-Sam and started going balls to the wall seeing what it was capable of.... i treat machines better than myself, just sayin.

I can't take it back to the dealer as he has documented court cases against him of screwing people over, and basically told me I'm on my own as it appears to be doing this because of operator error. I operated this thing for no more than 15-20 minutes after delivery. I had thought I did quite a bit of background on this/these Iseki tractors and had heard nothing but positive things so I felt like I would be good to go on it.

I'll try and get some photos, with all that happened unloading my friend who helped me with delivery has it on his trailer still at his place... also my road washed out below the highway three days after this fiasco happened so I gotta get that fixed so I can get it to my shop to start working on it
