Tractor
Kubota L6060
Embarrassing, frustrating, and perhaps comical as well.

I have 20 acres I purchased and built a home with a half mile driveway. I initially wanted a tractor and was confused. Posted here and read tons. I finally decided I wanted the biggest and baddest machine, so I got a new Kubota L6060 with a cab, loaded with every accessory. Loved it, I called it my Caddilac. It was overkill. I mainly used it for grappling. I cleaned up the property well. Then there was a period after I moved in where I did not use it for like a month. Thought that it was I crazy that I had a 50K machine rotting in my garage. At this time I could not justify the machine. I have a great neighbor who plows my half mile driveway for only 75 dollars. Meanwhile I'm looking at getting a V plow for L6060 and a monster front snowblower, which was like 10K for both. There was no grass yet at this time, but the lawn area is 1.5 acres. I briefly tinkered with the idea of putting a finish mower on the back and making quick work of things, but thought the weight was too much and would rut and makes things unattractive. The house and lot are gorgeous. Im an inexperienced homeowner who just wanted the best machine. For some crazy reason I decided to sell it. Posted it and sold it in a week. Only surprisingly lost $1,500 after using it for 6 months.

Here I am today, desperately wanting another tractor. The driveway is getting paved next week. I called a local rental place to rent a skid steer with a grapple for a week and they wanted 2k. I am looking at this second tractor purchase differently. I am going to do what wise tractor people do, list needs and then find a suitable machine.

Needs are...
1) Keeping the sides of the new driveway beautiful and manicured. There are 20" shoulders on both side going down that need to be bush hogged through the summer.

2) Snow removal. Even though my neighbor does it cheap. I would rather do it, and just love anything to do with snow. Im thinking a front blower would be good. The driveway pavement will be 12' wide. Maybe also get a blade for lighter amounts.

3) Grappling. Seems like even though I did most of the grappling to get the place looking good, there always seems like more to do, especially since Im really obsessed with as my brother calls, manicuring the forest. I am plucking out out dead branches on the ground whenever they are within sight. I bought a 13 horse billy goat blower and have blown away so many leaves the woods look beautiful.

4) Mowing. I have not purchased a mower yet because the first lawn that was attempted in the fall did not take. So I just hydro seeded everything last week and will hopefully have a lawn to mow in a month or so. I am torn between somehow finding the right tractor that can mow properly. Unlikely though since I read time and time again that zero turns are far superior in terms of price, cut quality, and cutting time. I am mildly concerned with some sloped areas I have. Though maybe the tractor would be better in the stability department.

5) Probably bucket work. I never used the bucket much when I had the L6060. It really is just a luxury wheel barrel I suppose.

6) Fun. I need to enjoy the machine. I could easily sub all my chores out, but would do it myself. I need the cab to be able to comfortably enjoy all the seasons here in the Northeast. Also, with the cabbed L6060 I had, not only was it great with the AC and not getting dirty, but several times I disturbed huge bee and hornets nests grappling and thought how awful it would be in an open cab.

I want the best machine for my needs. I am a Kubota fan. I'd like to make purchase this week. One mistake I believe I made was abruptly selling the first machine because of how infrequently I would use it. Maybe it is normal to have tractor and not use it for several weeks at a time. I mistakenly thought since sometimes several weeks go by and it doesn't get started that it was unnecessary to have one. What a fool I was. I will be smarter the second time around, I hope!

Thank you

My tractor sits for weeks at a time;when no snow to plow or too wet to work food plots ect;I would never consider getting rid of it.Since you are a Kubota fan maybe a cabbed L4060 ;a little smaller but still capable tractor.
Snow blowers are quite expensive;if you were in Central NY where the measure snow in feet it would be worth-while;I have a 8' Curtis snow plow(FEL mounted) and a 7' rear blade that handles my snow removal duty.

Kubota B3350. And, don't beat yourself up on the other tractor. I bought a B2320 for my mountain property and sold it two years later at only an $800 loss. Now I'm wondering what to do there myself...

When I bought my TC33D, I wanted the highest HP in the smaller package so it had a 72" belly mower but didn't pack down the yard. It was a great mowing machine which was the main use I gave it. The biggest drawback with my Toolcat over the TC33D is the weight and how soon I can drive it on delicate areas. Weight does help sometimes, but it can also be an issue. Belly mowers are very handy as they go around trees easily and they don't swing and hit stuff like a rear mower. Get a tractor that the FEL removes easily and only mount it when needed. A 30-35 hp machine would be a fine machine for what you are doing.....live and learn....we all do it our whole life.

I would go with another L-series Kubota, only a little smaller - think 25-30hp.

Kubota L3560 Cab, smallest of the 'Grand L' Kubota tractors. Buy the optional LA805 Loader. Do not "load" the rear tires. The cab provides enough weight for traction under all circumstances.

All the Grand L tractors share a SINGLE Operator's Manual, so your learning curve will be an hour or so......

I would load the tires unless you are mowing a lawn;for snow removal and loader work;rear weight is needed.

I have a JD 4105 (41 engine HP) and a Woods PRD7200 mower. I have less than $11K in both.

If the tractor had a loader, it would be the only tractor I need,, with 40 acres.

Someone else who discovered that bigger can be better. I've upsized 4 times since we built here in '89. The last time was this past December when the L4240 followed me home.

It did a great job with the snow plow in the few small storms we had. Until I mowed with the L4240 there was a nagging voice that was saying this tractor just might be a tad large - and the nagging voice wasn't from Wifey. She actually encouraged me.

An unfinished refurb project on the 91" RFM I have lined up for the L4240 has prevented me from using it. The L3200 still has the bucket and rear blower on, so I borrowed its 6' RFM. When the 91" deck is done, the L3200 will be up for sale.

There are some lower limbs that need pruned so they don't grate across the top of the cab. Other than that, it's been a real treat to use. It's way more comfortable than anything else I've had. The HST+ is a great feature. Plenty of HP and loader capacity. Whole loader just as easy to get on and off as the previous 'Botas. Tires leave almost no marks. Best lawn mower I've had:)

The tracks in the grass between the tractors are from the L4240 and the tracks crossing in front of the L3200 were made by the L3200. The picture is from an experiment about a week ago. The larger tractor felt more nimble than the smaller one. To compare how short they'd turn, a driveway marker was pushed into the ground against the rear left tire. Then they were both driven in a hard left turn till they went 1/2 a circle. The measurements were 71" for the L4240 and 98" for the L3200.

Rear finish mower on a DK 40 here with no plans or desire to go backwards.
By the way I get closer to the trees with the rear finish mower now than I ever did with a mid mount mower on a smaller tractor!
