I finally saw a new Jeep "pickup" today

Jstpssng - something like the blue Jeep pickup IS in production. Lithia motors ( local Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram dealer ) had something just like that on the showroom floor last year. It was built off a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon frame. Some company in CA builds them. It was an exciting thing to look at - until you saw the window sticker. $138K.

They must have sold the thing. It was gone when I started looking for a Power Wagon last September. It would have been a lot better off-road vehicle if the interior was some type of industrial cloth material. It was ALL imported Spanish leather - head to toe. I just don't think leather would go well with mud, blood and guts - as an off-road or hunting rig.

For $138K I wouldn't dare take it off the pavement-which means that it wouldn't even come down the gravel road to my house. Obviously some people have more money than I do, to throw that kind of money away on a vehicle. Just imagine what my dog's muddy paws would do to that upholstery at the end of the day.

I’ll admit that I’ve become more of a Toyota fan over time. I own an original 1980 FJ40 and I belong to the local Toyota Land Cruiser club. We get together once a month to drink beer and work on our trucks.

I’ve learned quite a bit about Toyota’s philosophy of building cars and trucks and have found that they take a very conservative approach to the way they do business. They let other companies take the risks in implementing new technology and they tend to stick to tried and true methods. As a result some of their models are quite long in the tooth, but are very reliable.

For example, the Tundra is over a decade old, but the second 2007 Tundra just hit 1 million miles, both driven by hot shot drivers in Louisiana for the oil and gas industry. Toyota traded the owner a new Tundra for his one million mile truck so they could study it. They put the 1 million mile motor on the dyno and found that it made just as much power as a new one. Nothing was wrong with the truck and it could have gone a lot longer. The motor in both million mile trucks were built in Alabama.

Second Toyota Tundra Pickup Hits a Million Miles, Serviced at Same Dealer as the First - The Drive

Also, Toyota transmissions are built by Aisin, which makes very high quality transmissions. The one million mile Tundra above had its original transmission rebuilt at 800,000 miles.

Toyota is due to redesign the Tundra and 4Runner in 2021. I’ll probably pick one up if/when my old truck dies.

The only problem with some of the older Toyotas in this part of the country is winter salt and rust. There's a lot of 1st gen Tundras running around VT with rusted out bumpers and fender wells (which doesn't pass in NH), but the fact that I still see them and T100 models out there speaks volumes.

The 1981-86 CJ-8 idea is back. :)

That Scrambler on the first row of pictures, second from the left, was the color of my Scrambler. Had to be careful of dinging the sides of the single wall bed sides. It would show on the outside. Had it as a pickup for a while and ran around with the doors off in the summer. Then bought a full hardtop for it and put in a back seat the our young kids. It was a pain to strap them in their carseats though. But its paint started to peel off around the gas tank fill spout. Traded it in for a 85 Cherokee with a Renualt diesel with a turbo in it. Jon

Renault diesel ? Or the Italian VM diesel that Landrover also used ?

Renault diesel. Jeep was part of them back in 85. Jon
