Buying off CL and the buyer wants cash

Its a total serious question. So, guess I need to investigate this. I've not saw a place on my state tax forms to declare sales tax that I owe.

I did mention that I have been in business for thirty years. I file and submit HST (Sales Tax). Some matters become very convoluted between personal and business assetts. And no, I would not give this Government one penny more than I have to.

How do you know that what you're buying is not stolen? With a receipt, you at least have some proof that you didn't steal it.

I don't see that as any proof at all. If it came right down to it, you would be in possession of stolen property one way or another.

I can sell you the Brooklyn Bridge and make up a pretty nice looking invoice on my laser printer. lol

Nobody wants to pay your tax on a bridge they can’t take home with them and everybody else is using.

If you buy something off CL that you think should have sales tax who do you give it to?

If you give it to the guy you are buying from, I bet he pockets it 99% of the time.

That would be the last place I tried to scam the guberment.

And, you buy the bridge as an investment. Think of the toll revenue, duh!

CASH also means no receipt, which surprises some people.

Must be a Canadian thing because it does happen here in the USA. I never keep one long term but have received them more as a bill of sale concept if needed to prove the ownership, etc.

But if I have a signed receipt from you, I can prove that I bought it in good faith and that you sold it to me, claiming that it was legally yours to sell (assuming that I use my normal receipt which has a picture of the item from the ad and which states that it is sold as is, where is and is to be removed immediately).
As for sales tax, the only things I have gotten a receipt for are cars (which have to be registered and the sales tax paid to the state) and farm equipment (for which I have a tax exempt certificate).

I have scribbled Fred Ziffle on a piece of paper and 555-1212 as the phone number, or some such thing. AND asked for similar documentation for tax purposes, because I realize that it is inappropriate to ask for a receipt in the underground economy. Generally, you pays your moneys and takes your chances. If you don't like that, best shop at the MALL.

Nothing wrong with that if both people agree and it痴 actually an underground transaction.

Not every cash transaction is an underground transaction. If you think it is then I doubt we would be doing any business anyway.

Cheers :drink:
