Replacing worn out tines. Does anyone have a recommendation for tiller blades? OEM or after market? Cheap parts usually imply poor quality resulting in poor value for the money spent.

I replaced the times on my Howard HR8 last spring. With a little digging ( pun intended ) I found that the Howard HR-8 was the same machine branded as a John Deere 66. Looking that up on eBay, I found a vendor selling replacement tines and bought the full set for $275 or so shipped to my house in Nevada. Quality is excellent, but had to use the old bolts. I bet if you do a eBay search you are going to come up with the same vendor. John Deere wanted 3X the price for the same product ?? And it was the same product they supplied to John Deere to resell. Can't remember the vendor name, but the biggest vendor selling them on ebay. Could you spend more ?? sure. Don't think you are going to get more for your money though. My HR-8=36 blades. Bet your HR-10 is just a few more of the same thing

If money is short, just replace the tines that come to a point on the end. If they do not come to a sharp point, they still have some life in them and will work as well as new ones.

Most of the current aftermarket tines are made in Europe or the US at the moment. I would not see a problem installing aftermarket, or OEM. There is most likely an option of curved or straight bottom tines. The rounded require less hp but do not create as smooth of a seed bed as the bottom of it is scalloped.

First off, had a brain fade, Howard HR-8 and John Deere 660 same machine. Howard HR-10 ?? Although the curved blades do seam to need less HP for the same cut, in service the curved bladed seamed to wear less than the square cornered ones. Still my 970 was hardly loaded with a full depth cut in fresh ground. Think at that rate it could have powered a 6-7' with rounded blades ease. Less shock with the rounded blades as well.

Owning three Howards and tilling commercially, I've went through a lot of tines...

I prefer the round tines, I can't see where the square tines to any better job and the round tines do last longer.

I only use Howard tines, why ?, because I till in some pretty awful conditions, and hit quite a bit of trash and lot's of rocks, Howard tines last longer!

Howard uses spl. bolts, when the going get's tough, be careful what bolts you use! I've had NO LUCK AT ALL using box store or yuppie farm store china bolts, I use Howard bolts or I go to a RELIABLE "nut/bolt store" for my bolts, making sure the replacements will work PROPERLY for holding the tines on. Yes they cost more, but I don't loose tines because of them either!

BTW, I RARELY use a bolt more than one time!
