Buying off CL and the buyer wants cash

I thought about this thread the other day. I sold a hitch to a guy I had posted on c-list. He text me Friday and said he couldn't get it until Sunday. I said okay, I'll message you after church and lunch. He lived an hour and 10 minutes away. Had 2 other people contact me who wanted it after that and I put them on hold. I text him Sunday and he said he would be there between 2 and 3. He showed up, looked at hitch, handed me some folded up twenties and I put them in my pocket. He said you should probably count it, I said nah I'm good. It was $5 more than I was asking when I counted it after he left. I figured if someone tells you they are going to do something then holds to it they are probably pretty honest. He stayed for about an hour and we talked about everything.

A friend once handed me a wad of cash and said there should be five hundred dollars there. I counted it at home and found three hundred. He would never do that to me on purpose. Someone might have stiffed him. I think I mentioned it to him, but it was very uncomfortable and I will never just put money in my pocket again.

Back in the 1990's I sold a pickup. Guy shows up with mostly cash and asks if I will take a cheque for the balance of $300.00. Not a lot of interest in it so I said OK. Cheque turns up NSF and later while trying again, account closed. Before I had a chance to go look for him, I recognize his name as having been arrested at a smash and grab at a jewelry store and realize getting my money is going to be difficult. Two days later, he shows up at my door telling me the transmission had quit. I had some work done on it and had told him it should be OK. I then thanked him for scamming me as it saved me about $400.00.

I have never heard that before. I accept cashiers checks during banking hours so I can call the bank and verify the check. It has always worked and the banks or CUs are always cooperative. Sundays, cash only. I do have one bogus BofA check copy that was sent directly to my CU. I called the bank after it was rejected and all they would say was that it was not a real account. The "buyer" was out of the area and got nothing.
According to info I got from my bank, a cashier's check may take up to 2 weeks to verify and are easily forged.
On the other hand, a personal check can be verified instantly if the cash is there. Nothing to say that the writer couldn't put a stop payment on it afterward but then you could sue him for fraud. Personal check with proper ID has a better chance of being good than any other method.
Do all your business at the bank and not on weekend. If buyer can only be there weekends, take his check, hold the goods till you can verify the check Monday morning. Then he can come get his purchased the next weekend. If they dont want to do that, then insist on full payment in CASH.

One thing about CL is how they will leave things posted weeks after they sold them. When I went to pick up the machine shop we bought the guy asked about the balance and I got it out of the truck and told him to count it then he disappeared for a while. When he had the full amount in cash he directly removed it from CL which was a first. The place my son is fixing up with the shop on it stayed listed for about a month I noticed.

CL users can be unique.

I get annoyed at the ads marked "sold" but left posted. Why do that?

I take my listing down within minutes of selling. But there is all this AUTOMATIC BS, and it allows people to contact you with a preprogrammed msg asking if the article is STILL available. I don't even answer. Mostly, when I did, thats the last you hear of them. They didn't want to buy it, just know if it was still available!

Way back before c-list my dad would put stuff in the ag-review. It's a free service and comes out in our state once a month. You had to submit your ad then it came out the next month and when you sold the item there was no way to stop getting calls. I remember numerous times dad selling something then spending 30+ minutes on the phone with people, I would hear him telling how much he got out of it, telling them the condition of it, etc. He would hang up and mom would always yell "tell them it's sold and hang up!" lol.
