Buying off CL and the buyer wants cash

1975 ford 3 tractor - farm & garden - by owner - sale

Ford 3000 Brookport CL.jpg

I was looking for wheels for the 3600 that were not rotted out and came across this 3000 Ford 55 miles away so I gave the car a full charge and headed out. The engine noise sounded like at the rod/crank level but it did almost stop after the oil pressure came up. The guy started it up but did not want it running because he said he was going to fix it if I did not buy it.

Due to the canister oil filter it has to be 1969 or older. The 4 speed no live PTO confused me. Due to cuts in the tire tread like from front end loader past usage then some plugged hydraulic fitting it must have had a loader on it at some point. The power steering did not work but it had no fluid in it. The rot around the rear tubes was advancing but the big surprise was a thick coat of paint applied by brush.

He only wanted to text but before I left the house I called and talked and got the GPS address texted to me. I have bought one tractor with a blown engine and that did not turn out to be a cheap tractor so I asked if he would take less than the $2200 price and he said no. A couple hours after I got home he texted asking what was my offer but was happy it was at his place instead of mine. I think younger people are more into texting than talking.

I made the trip with 20 miles remaining on the battery.

I forgot to mention seeing the oil pan had been pulled I asked the guy about it and he said a friend pulled it for him. Later out of the blue he said he expects there is one rod and one main bearing that needs replacing and that he is pulling it off of CL (that was 4 days ago) if I did not take it and fix the knocking. I added a photo from the ad just in case he does pull the ad.

When I sold my L4630, I asked for cash. Buyer showed up from a nearby town with truck and trailer so I knew he was serious.
I recognized his last name as a relative of a known bluegrass musician from the same town.
We chatted a bit about music, then got down to haggling. Ended up selling for $1k less than my asking which was all the cash he was carrying! No problem at all.

We agreed on a price, over the phone.
I did not want to drive 350 miles carrying 32K cash.
I had not seen the L48 TLB, but a friend had looked at it for me.

I asked the private seller if he would accept a mailed bank check as a 20% deposit ($6,400), and a second check for the balance (from the same bank) at pickup.
He agreed.

He had two weeks for the first check to clear, and also could have called the bank for to verify the balance due (at pickup) check.
He did not call, though I suggested he should, if he had any doubts.

Nice original owner gentleman, who was a small time builder, now suffering from Parkinson's disease, and unable to operate the TLB any longer.

Yeah, I usually only show the money I want to pay too. :D

I separate money in my pockets before arriving for a cash deal.

I'll take the asking price, but pull some off, so the money I'm wanting to offer is ready to hold out. But if you refuse to take it from my hands, I can go to the left jeans pocket and make it right if I want to.

I doubt that method would fool many sellers.

It's worked many-a-time.

It's not a trick to fool anyone. Its just making an offer for below asking, perfectly legitimate. If they refuses and hold firm, you can grab the extra cash. I do this too.

It has almost 100% worked. Your selling a ??? and asking $800 on CL. I show up with $720 in my right pocket and the other $20 bills in my left. We look at it, talk a bit, tell some friendly stories and "connect" a bit.... We are buddies now. It's been 20 minutes, and the time to make the deal has come. I pull my $720 out and tell you I'm a buyer, no more messing around, take $720 and load the ??? into my loving hands. I hold out that folded $720 for you to take. Now you decide, are we about to go back and forth over $20, over $40? Do you insist on the asking price? We can get there if you want to prolong this.... but normally, if I am not insulting you with a low ball offer... you just concede to that $720 and we walk away with both being happy.

Now, If I pulled $600 out, your pissed. I hit a trigger in you and now you flipped from my buddy giving me a deal to the guy that just decided I am a pecker fly and you are not budging an inch for a pecker fly.
