Buying off CL and the buyer wants cash

It's not a trick to fool anyone. Its just making an offer for below asking, perfectly legitimate. If they refuses and hold firm, you can grab the extra cash. I do this too.

I don't haggle on or low-ball listed prices. If I arrive to see an item below par I walk away. The only risk is time & fuel spent to vet an item. I know ahead what I'm willing to pay if I see something I want.

"What'll ya give me for it?" is when you keep track of how much is in each pocket, do the math, and whip out the "all I have" to make an offer. ;)

That said, I often accept offers below my verbal ask if I want rid of something. Gaining the space it took up often surpasses any need/desire for recompense.

Looking to get $8k for the bucket truck, and won't come down on that.

It has almost 100% worked. Your selling a ??? and asking $800 on CL. I show up with $720 in my right pocket and the other $20 bills in my left. We look at it, talk a bit, tell some friendly stories and "connect" a bit.... We are buddies now. It's been 20 minutes, and the time to make the deal has come. I pull my $720 out and tell you I'm a buyer, no more messing around, take $720 and load the ??? into my loving hands. I hold out that folded $720 for you to take. Now you decide, are we about to go back and forth over $20, over $40? Do you insist on the asking price? We can get there if you want to prolong this.... but normally, if I am not insulting you with a low ball offer... you just concede to that $720 and we walk away with both being happy.

Now, If I pulled $600 out, your pissed. I hit a trigger in you and now you flipped from my buddy giving me a deal to the guy that just decided I am a pecker fly and you are not budging an inch for a pecker fly.

I don't usually take the money out. I don't like someone waiving money at me like I'm a stripper or something. I just say something like " well, I got $720 if you can take that." Or, "I'd be a buyer at $720".

But what if I actually did want to watch ya dance for an extra $20!

I had a guy pull the 'walk-away' on me one time. He low balled me on a car I had for sale and I just shrugged my shoulders and said, "well, it's not eating anything."

He shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Got in his car and drove off. Drove around the block and came back. Asked if I would take any less. Well, at this point I knew he wanted it and would pay full price.

I said 'no, it's worth that.'

He said 'OK.' and gave me the money.

I wasn't 'making him pay' full price because I was 'insulted' about the low-ball offer. I don't get insulted just because somebody offers me less that stated price, what they are willing to pay. I have decided to 'not sell' something because of the way someone acted but that took a lot more than just the offer of a lower amount of money.

A good friend of mine's older sister would have garage sales. Something was say 120$ and they asked if she would take a $100 as they only had 2-$100 bills. She responded with...oh that's ok we can break a $100 bill.

Pulling a trailer has very little to do with the seriousness of the buyer. If he's traveled more than 30 or 40 miles he'd be stupid to not come with a trailer. :)

Since a lot of people think that way though, it might be wise to unhook the trailer somewhere safe before showing up at the transaction site. :)

My neighbor wanted a tractor and found one that sounded good to him about 150 miles away and wanted me to come with him to check it out. He's not mechanically inclined or tractor savvy. We took my truck and trailer. I drove the tractor a bit and recommended that he not buy it since it would take more work that he could do to fix it up. (Ever seen hydraulic fluid bubbling up out of the dip stick tube? among other things.)

So just because someone shows up with a trailer doesn't mean they're going to buy it, but it does mean they are seriously considering it.

Fully agree.

And a potential buyer who shows up prepared to haul the junk away is the kind you want to spend time talking to.
