correct its the output shaft from the trannie ( drive shaft ) whatever u want to call it that runs to the front end
I have pix i just went out and took them, will have them shortly they are uploading to my email then i can put them on here and you can name/call them whatever you want i call them broken ;-)

Looks like something internal to the front axle failed, the shaft you showed is the weakest link and possibly just a result of the front axle failure. Definitely NOT operator error but crappy build.

If he was not in 4x4, why would the shaft fail?

I am waiting for the verdict from JD, keep us posted.

I'll bet the broken front axle drive shaft tangled with the mower drive shaft and damaged it. Then when the mower was used the damage showed up.

Bad metal? Manufacturing defect? From the other posts, I gather that shaft is rotating all the time whether it's being driven by the transmission or not. If it was bad from the factory, it may have just let go from the rotational forces. That would explain why everything else still worked, drive, hydraulics, etc. The MMM may have worked also if it hadn't been whomped on by the flailing shaft.

other notes..........the MMM has never been off and its the quickconnect that you drive on and it locks into position and there is not really a way i can see the MMM pto shaft would be able to make contact with the Front drive shaft - when i got it the MMM gear box was VERY noisy and deere agreed and replaced it right out the gate. They said they had a couple like that and one also self destructed. The replacement MMM gear box has been normal noise for a gear box.

And you are correct - the front drive shaft rotates at all times, the drive to it is provided by coupling inside the transmission when you engage the 4x4 lever. I have another conversation in here regarding my reviews of the 2038R and i complained months ago that it was stiff and hard to manipulate the lever, its a pull up, push down type T handle that comes up from the floor board/operation station.

I bet they dont come up with much of anything. I am guessing something bound up and until it breaks this may happen again. The mystery to me is the hydraulic whine that makes me lean to something in the hydro/pump - i will be curious to see if the 4x4 handle is easier to engage and disengage once repaired. Also it does look like there is a little damage to the splines/shaft that comes out of the trannie not sure if it will be repairable by filing out the grooves or if its damaged too much.

They come to pick it up in the morning

With only 36 hours I hope that they replace the shaft if the splines are that bad.

Looks like when the back end of the drive shaft snapped at the tranny (for unknown reasons) when going at road speed and the drive shaft flopped around, then jammed something solid and couldn’t turn anymore.
All that momentum and front tires turning it snapped the shaft at the front axle and almost threw OP over the hood.
