I recently purchased a brand new Ram 2500 series Power Wagon( the Taco Wagon). It's got all the bells 'n whistles known to man - plus Spanish leather seats & interior trim. The price was beyond OUTRAGEOUS. But I finally figured it out - there is no way, that I know, that I can take it with me when I go.

I did not buy this truck to get good mileage. It is strictly for fun. However - on a recent trip up north, thru the mountains, I got 18 mpg. And that is with 4.11 gears and a 410 hp Hemi engine. The round trip is 265 miles.

That is more than adequate, for me. And I go back, at least, 25 years every time I drive it. It is a REAL blast.

I think the moniker "gas-guzzler" would no longer apply to today's pickup trucks including 3/4 and 1-ton pickups. I remember the MPGs my 1986 Suburban got, 12 to 13 MPGs. Now I'm seeing 17 to 19 in my 1/2 ton and a few MPGs higher in my 1-ton diesel pickup.

Yet the payload is greater, the frames are beefier, and the brakes generally heavier than comparable trucks of 1986.

And they last longer with less maintenance! :thumbsup:

Reading Oosik’s comment about his PW... compare that to my 2004 Ford Ranger which has never gotten over 17 mpg. Last weekend I put a 5’ tiller on back and hauled it 200 miles to my mother’s house;, all highway miles, down and back I got 14.5 mpg. Granted a lot of that was traveling at 70-75, but still ridiculous mileage for a small truck.

Thats what my Volvo 2.5 TDI does with a 5000 pound trailer. Commuting empty, i get 50mpg.

But anyways, 25mpg is pretty nice for a 2.5 ton vehicle with 4wd and a huge frontal surface...

Sadly we don't get the Volvo TDI here. My other vehicle is a V60 R-Design AWD that I can reach 30-30.5 mpg on my commute in the warm weather; since it uses premium fuel, the cost per commute is almost the same as driving the Sierra.

Apparently I wasn't the only poster who picked up on that.
Reminds me of a post on another forum where an F250 driver who was at a Home Depot to pick up a pallet of material caught a bunch of grief from some self righteous woman, a total stranger, who thought it her duty to tell the guy nobody needed a truck like that.

Yes the 9 miles per gallon my old truck gets hurts, but I spend more on insurance per year than gas as I don't drive it much. Two months payments would be more than my yearly fuel cost. This may change with fuel near $1.50 per litre recently (approx. $6.00 US gal.)

Funny how someones gas guzzling p/u is somehow OK when compared to the obviously horrible fuel economoy of some cars.

I was at my mechanic last Friday. Amazing how stupid your average consumer is. Two vehicles, different brands in there for expensive rear AC and heat repairs. They get a lot of those. Many they simply cap off! No idea what they are buying. They can afford the low weekly payments but not the repairs on that ridiculous stuff. Whip out the old card!

In Europe nobody buys a pickup (or any light commercial vehicle for that matter) for commuting. Weight based tax and insurance, and gas at 1.45 euro per liter, make you think twice before spending your money.

So yes, the statement is true: Americans love to drive a light commercial vehicle for personal transport, and accept the poor fuel economy compared to a midsized sedan s European drives to work.

I have two trailers, a single axle untagged 2x1m, and a 4.2x2m deckover for all my hauling needs. The small trailer carties a 1000 pounds and hardly makes a difference in fuel use compared to commuting with just the car...
