I think someone ignored bearing maintenance, and the bearings fell into the gears, and damaged them..I think the overall condition shows it never was abused and could be a very rewarding project. Keep up the good job.

My personal opinion, much less than that.. broken bearings floating around in the gearbox..I agree that is not a good thing but we all know machines that have run a long time with damaged teeth that continued to run OK for a long time. It gets expensive if we try to make them like new again. It may have been that way the last 10 years of its working life.
