I think someone ignored bearing maintenance, and the bearings fell into the gears, and damaged them..

I agree that is not a good thing but we all know machines that have run a long time with damaged teeth that continued to run OK for a long time. It gets expensive if we try to make them like new again. It may have been that way the last 10 years of its working life.

My personal opinion, much less than that.. broken bearings floating around in the gearbox..

Reading through this, could only wonder how he learned the sequence for disassembly of the various parts. Fairly complex.
