It doesn’t look out of wack to me. Look at the placement of the axels of my previous trailer in post 15 or the current trailer here. Black trailer was a 20+5 the yellow is a foot shorter. Up until the point of compromised steering or overloading hitches too much weight is better than not enough. My backhoe is pretty back heavy but the dually isn’t noticeably squatted with that loading position. Aside from swaying you need weight on the truck for traction.

I've had my 10k# BP trailer for many years without any problems after I get it set up right which takes awhile. Keep in mind that this trailer is an RV so it doesn't change weight or distribution much. Also, the tongue weight is a consideration. My 1600# really is getting into the GN range and there are limits on the BP hitches. I have never had a GN, but if I were to do it over again, I'd put about 9000# at the line between BP and GN.

You will be fine. My 22’ tilt deck is rated at 15k lbs. Two 7k axles, with 1k on the ball. I have hauled 10k tractor on it many times with my dually.
Things to watch out for though...upgrade to class 5 hitch on the truck if it doesn’t already have it. Get a ball and shank rated for 18 or 20k. Also put as much weight as far forward as you can without making the truck squat too bad. ie load it until the overload springs are almost touching their stops, otherwise you will get sway, even with a crew cab long bed dually.

There’s a huge difference in a dually and a 3/4 ton. If you think it was sketchy with a dually it would be disastrous with a 3/4 ton.

Ok so just purchased the 14k PJ F8 model deckover trailer. It’s 20’ flat with 4’ dovetail tag along or conventional hitch. Weight of trailer is 3900lbs.

The tractor I’m buying and must transport home weighs right in at 10k. That’s with fluid in tires and FEL. So total trailer weight is just under 14k. My truck is a 2018 GMC Duramax crewcab 4x4 with 3.73 gears. Payload is 2165lbs. So can someone help me understand if I’m in spec with DOT or slightly over weight and if so how please?

Thank you,

From post #1
Lastly, my truck is a 2018 GMC 2500 Duramax with 3.73 gears. Max conventional towing is 13k.
So it looks like you'll be slightly over weight on the trailer. But, I think your question is more whether you meet the DOT licensing requirements. I assume your truck weight is under 10K, so truck (10k) plus trailer (14K) = 24,000# is under the 26,000# limit for a commercial license.

This happens to be from the Arizona website since it was the quickest to find, but applies in other states too:
Vehicles Requiring a CDL

P.S. I don't think a couple hundred pounds over on the trailer is going to matter, nor do I think you'll have any problems with the highway patrol. You are not a commercial vehicle, you do not have a DOT number, and they will not want you to go thru the weigh stations. There was a surprise weigh station check set up at a roadside rest area one time for "all trucks & trailers". I weighted about 20K at the time and was stopping anyway, so I asked if I was included and was told no.

Ok great that was the info i needed. My truck weighs right at 7800lbs as sits. Will verify this info next week on black cat scales. So a 2150 payload plus truck puts me right at the 10k total weight. With 26k being the limit I should be good then. Thank you.

I guess I thought you were asking about your truck being over weight for some reason. But as 3Ts said, so long as you're under the magic number of 26.000 pounds combined gross vehicle weight (CGVW), a regular drivers license should suffice.
