Hi all

I have property where bats living in chimney. Can I put something in chimney to discourage them from living there. Pest control said he's not allowed to do anything with these creatures. I don't want to hurt them. Just have them to move to greener pastures. Any ideas or info?

Cheers....Coffeeman

Buy some "Bat-Houses" and put them some where on you property (Trees/Fence/Wall) and when the bats are out of the chimney, block it. They ought to make the transfer on their own. Bats are precious and useful and should be helped.

Yes. But that depends on the state, the species of bat, time of year, etc....

What was the reason the pest control gave?

Check with your state or county agencies first to avoid a fine if someone finds out.

If they have babies in there, you don't want to do the following until the babies are grown, etc....

Put a bat excluder device on the chimney. They can crawl out, but they cannot get back in. Once they are all gone, put a screen with 1/4" mesh over the opening. And that's that.

Start a small fire . . . :confused3: they will leave.

Have a bat house built and located high up on the shady side of a building or tree. Late at night start a smoky, small fire in the stove/fireplace. Let it smoke for half an hour. Before the fire goes out put a quarter inch mesh cap on the chimney. If done late at night - the bats will already be out and about. The smoky fire will discourage any further attempt at their re-entry. They really avoid smoky situations and even the smell of smoke.

Pest control told he wasn't allowed by law. He indicated property owner was allowed.
Yrs ago my daughter had bats in attic. One was found dead in house. They knew to have Bat tested. They put bat on porch to save for testing. In morning dead bat gone. The big worry was 6 month old granddaughter. Bat bites are hard to see for doctors. Daughter , Hubby & 2 kids all had to take series of shots, in case of bite, especially baby. She did get rid of her bats. I don't remember how. Part of it was sealing all ways in attic. Never thought of bad houses

I'm sure there are babies in property i"m posting about.. They are spreading their wings and are very active early dusk , especially when cloudy. They have been there for years. We see them now a lot, smaller ones. About August we we will see only when near dark. My question raised because I have a couple neighbors complaining to me. Never been noticed before by outsiders.. We all know that story.

Hey Moss Road, Thanks for the info. I have heard a bat can eat up to 2000 insects a nite. Only 20 bats can eat a lot of bugs?

Have a good evening. Coffeeman

Had squirrels in chimney above the flue so I stuck a radio in side the fire box and turned up the volume to an obnoxious talk radio station and two days later they were gone. Will this work on bats????

Unfortunately, been there, done that on our whole family having to get rabies shots due to bats and unvaccinated kitten about 2.5 years ago. No matter what we've done, we get a bat or two in the house every year or two. No rhyme or reason. Spring, Fall. The rabies one was on Christmas Eve.

So, best advice, keep pet vaccinations up to date. Always have kids sleep in their bedrooms with the doors closed. If you see a bat in your house and you have kids, catch the bat and have it tested. Statistically, rabies is 100% fatal by the time it's diagnosed. Nothing to mess with.

Why are your neighbors complaining about the bats? They're beneficial critters.

I think I've had a little success by putting LED lights in my attic that are on a revers photo cell, so they come on in the daytime and go out at night.

In the evening, bats look for light and head outside to feed. When the sun comes up, they go back to their roost.

That's why I'd suggest the bat excluders for your chimney, but only after you're sure there are no more babies, like in the fall.

DO NOT START A FIRE. Here's why...

First, if there's bats, there's bat poop. Guano. It dries and is flammable. So if you've had bats in your chimney for years, there's a good chance there's years of poop in there.

Second, during summer, when you see the bats leaving, that's the mommas going out to feed. They leave the babies behind. You start a fire and the babies will try and find a way to crawl out.... into your house. Or, they'll die of smoke and heat.

Third, besides being illegal to mess with bats during baby season, it's not necessary. Just wait until late summer and fall. Shine some lights up into the chimney at night to see if they're all gone, and put 1/4" wire mesh on top of your chimney and that's that. They won't be able to get back in. If they aren't all gone, you can make a long funnel and flap out of wire mesh and cloth mesh that acts as a one-way valve. Any bats inside can find their way out through the funnel and flap, but won't be able to get back in.

Thought it was bats in the belfry.

But a good hot fire should encourage them to move out.
