Diesel Fume Odor

This doesn't sound normal at all especially for a cab tractor. Ask your dealer to inspect it. I occasionally get whiffs of diesel fumes when operating and the wind hits just the right way or when I start the tractor in the shop before moving it out, but I don't ever bathe in diesel exhaust.

Tier 4 models with emissions equipment don't make that diesel stink. There's a characteristic DPF smell from some but it's much less bothersome.

Be careful what you wish for.
My Ford 1920 has a vertical exhaust.
Nasty diesel smoke blowing in my face much of the time.

Our first llttle compact tractor was like that too. Exhaust could be mounted sideways or vertical. When mounted vertical it was too short to be effective. I added about 3 feet of lightweight steel tubing to the vertical mode and that solved all the problems. The tubing was from the hardware store where someone had mis-labeled it as a vacuum cleaner hose extension! Imagine that......

Thanks.
I will try your method!
Not sure I will add 3 feet, but will try adding some.

On occasions when I was traveling at just the right speed getting a lung full of diesel fumes straight from the engine has been enough to make me dry reach, that is I almost threw up a couple of times. Other times I wouldn't really notice it at all, just a warm air flow past my head when it was a bit cold, but if I had been slashing all day then at night, I would pick grey gunk out of my nose that I never got when I drove the old grey Fergie with a vertical stack. I decided that I want to see my grand-kids grow up, not too particular about lung cancer, so I fitted an extension pipe to eject the diesel exhaust up above my head and well out of my breathing air. I have only just fitted it and the difference is really noticeable, clean fresh air in my face all day, I only wish that I had done the work when I first noticed the insane new design of ejecting the hot rising exhaust gases at a location where the operator is pretty well guaranteed to breathe in a fair percentage of the engines emissions.
The flexible stainless steel hose that I fitted to my Kubota L4600 tractor cost me a couple of hundred dollars. Well worth the money for clean fresh air and likely a longer life! A couple of photos tell the story about the 14' (about 4 metres) of stainless steel flexible hose. The flexible stainless steel hose I used is about 1mm (0.03937008") internal diameter larger than the exhaust outlet on the tractor. I simply cut the exhaust outlet pipe off about 2" above the bend at the exhaust outlet point and welded it back on again facing the back of the tractor and then clamped on the flexible stainless steel hose.
Can't say that my clothes ever smelt too bad, at least wife hasn't said anything but I agree when I use the chainsaw I end up stinking of 2 stroke exhaust and I go and have a shower also. L4600_ExhaustPipe_Re-route_3.JPG
I have a BH92 Kubota Backhoe attachment that I haven't put back on since I fitted the exhaust extension pipe but I'm fairly certain that it will be well clear of all the connections.
All the best and good luck with whatever option you go with!

Here's a little more info: Eventually I went to a 3 foot piece of rigid electrical conduit because I found that Home Depot had a an adapter fitting that woulld clamp the conduit to the existing muffler pipe. Then at the top of the conduit I put an 8" angled chrome exhaust tip from the automotive box store - the kind of tip seen in vintage hot rod cars. Chrome tips are universal fit with set screws.
Angling the exhaust away as well as up turned out to be necessary because if just shot upwards, little particles of soot & diesel slobber can rain down. ..... ugh....

I will definitely ask the dealer to inspect things and see if they can discover why the smell is so bad.

Thanks !

TimP have you tried switching the fresh/outside air intake from one position to the other to see if it makes a difference?

Can't remember if your rear side windows open or not,I'm thinking the CC version does.
I often drive around with the right side window open(unless the AC is on)and almost never smell any fumes.

Waxman did a wonderful B3030 build some years ago.He added a sweet vertical exhaust.
Don't think he's around here anymore.
He also did a neat L3240 cab build.

Hope this helps.
Good Luck!

Hi number two.

Yes, my rear window does open, but the B3000 does not have the side windows that open like the 3030 does.

I have tried riding with he rear window open and it seemed to abate the odor somewhat.

I have not tried adjusting the fresh air adjustment but I keep it on outside/fresh air. I'll try changing it up and see what happens

I have seen several of the Posts that Waxman did about sound proofing and a few other things. He is a talented guy.

I'll search his posts for the exhaust modification. But it's probably beyond my capabilities as I don't have many of the tools needed, such as a welder, drill press etc.

I don't even have a vice on my tiny workbench.

But I sure hope I can get the smell mitigated.

Even when it's sitting in the garage not being used, there is a pervasive diesel odor in the cab.

I often open one door and the rear window to try to air it out, but it hasn't helped.

Thanks !

I experienced a similar fume situation a dozen years ago while driving a tanker.

At the end of the shift,my clothes smelled like exhaust and I smelled it the whole shift.
The two other guys that drove the tractor noticed nothing.
After my complaining, the let me swing by the shop.
The technician was sympathetic and found a crack in the exhaust.

Turned out the lead driver left the engine brake on 3 and went off the road one slippery morning.
Presumably that's when the crack happened.
The only difference I could ever determine was I always drove with the window down a little.
The other guys left the window up.
I guess the window being up allowed the blower to pressurize the cab, keeping the fumes out.

I never minded diesel exhaust before, but since then,I really don't care for it. Too Bad.

Perhaps you can use those thoughts to aid your situation?

Good Luck!
