I think it's time to look for a harness.

I like “Bluewater” harnesses and ropes. Whatever you choose make sure you have leg straps. In the event of an actual fall you’ll be thankful for the support.

I don't like belts, so a waist only harness would have to be a few inches wide. I'd also be concerned that if you DO happen to fall, there might be some serious stress on the midsection if the rope were a bit too slack.

That. I need freedom of movement for placing roof panels and use of tools.

Yeah, I don't need a high dollar certified model.

If you fall the harness has already failed. Never hook on a point that’s farther than the edge. The only time I ever do that is I hook about 2” farther than the edge when I’m getting on a ladder.

If I remember correctly ........

First safety class I went to left a impression on me. Instructor said that if we did not think that we could hang a mid size car on the anchor point and have it hold then do something better. That is the amount of force a average person puts on the anchor with just a 6 foot fall. Which by the way is the max amount of drop your supposed to expose your self to if I remover correctly.

Also a anchor point a few feet lower than you equates to the 6 foot of strap on your harness pulse the distance the anchor is below you. So keep the anchor above you or use a shorter strap if the anchor is below you.

While steep roofs make look nice, I really appreciate mine. My shop roof is metal and I do not know the pitch off hand, but it is easy enough to walk on. The house has about the same pitch except it is composite and hip roof. I really like the hip roof on the (single level) house, I am never that far up. Far enough to get hurt I know, but not like going down from the peak of a two story house like my previous houses. I fell once off of a ladder about 1-1/2 stories onto grass once as an adult and as a kid I was pushed out of a second story widow by a neighbor kid who thought it would be funny. I hit my head on concrete. Massive concussion and I was not given much of a chance, but I made it. Not something anyone should go through.

^^^^
My shed has a 1:4 pitch and I still slid off it one day while shoveling snow. Luckily there was already a big pile at the bottom, so I just tossed the shovel to keep rom landing on it and landed on my feet.

I see a few in the $30-50 range:

PULSAR P5500-QR

INNOPOWER IFA017

FallTech 7015

Also a few Miller 650s in that price range including a few used ones for even less.

Remember, this is for occasional homeowner use on a roof, not dangling from high iron. But I don't want too cheap.

think of how much your life is worth, and consider you can be a permanent quadriplegic, like Christopher Reeve was, just falling a few feet off a horse!.. I actually would rather die from a fall than be like that!.. to each his own, though, some people can deal with it, others can't!..

He’s not rock climbing with it. He’s not going to be falling and it catching him. He’s not even hanging from it unless his rigging sucks. And at that point he’s stuck on the side of the roof which isn’t good either. It’s job is to keep him from sliding off the roof.

Shoveling snow on a metal roof is an accident waiting to happen and even low pitch roofs can be hazardous. I had a 4/12 pitch 14' sidewall roof I was cleaning tree residue off to make it look better. Once clean and even damp it can be walked on. I made a mistake of walking on a dirty portion near the peak with water over spray on. I dropped like a bag of potatoes and slide slowly about 20' before friction and screw heads stopped me about 3 foot from the side.

Now I bought a bucket fall protection kit with harness, 50' or heavy poly rope and clamps etc. I don't have anything to hook it to so I throw a heavy rope to the other side and attach it to a tractor or tree. It has a sliding catch system so you need to release using a lever to go downward. The rope stays tight almost all the time using that system.
