I mow the pasture with 6' finish mower, gonna have to run slow, make several passes, keep rpms up.

I have a 72" Landpride finish mower that does a great job on my lawn. Yesterday I did a small mowing job with it and cut grass like you did (~3ft tall). Our tractors are approximately the same power, though yours may have 1HP more at the PTO. I raised my gauge wheels as high as I could go, used low range and mowed at a crawl and at full power. It cut pretty well, but its a heck of a load on the tractor.

A 5' bush hog with dull blades will perform about the same.

I don't think you have anything wrong but I do think its a mistake to compare a tractor with twice the size and power, using the same implement.

Yeah thats kind of what I found out, certain patches I could run through at good speed, other runs I would have to snail pace it or it would get bogged down. The machine I think would ultimately power that tool in 6-12in of grass at full speed, just not at 3ft. Like I said thoughts were confirmed, wrong tool for the job and I get that, just was checking my thoughts

I don't mind asking a lot of my machinery for one-off jobs, I just go slow enough to not damage anything. I would wear that job like a badge of honor!
I did most of my new home tractor work with a B8200 2wd. Cut 4 acres of abandoned field, leveled with 4' box blade, and laid down 500' of gravel with a 3 point scoop and rake. I didn't break any speed records, but the work got done.

The type of grass or weeds also makes a big difference in the cut. Even with my 50hp kubota I would have to make 3 passes with a 6' brush hog. The grass was bahai and the weeds were dove or goat weeds. It was like cutting wire.

thanks thus far, kind of what figured wrong tool for the job, kind of what I thought. Its what I had and it did the job. I figure d brush hog would have done better as well. Just wanted to confirm what I thought the issue was.
I prefer using my finish mower in multiple passes to a rotary. It cuts the grass finer. I started my 2nd pass on my field tonight, back wheels of mower on ground, front wheels raised some.

I usually mow before it gets this high, but the constant rain, then i got sick, just couldnt keep up.

I ran a 52 inch rough cut mower this afternoon with B2710 kubota at about same height, thick heavy grass. Could only mow about half the width of the mower and it left a mess. As has been said a lot varies with the grass. Have a 72 inch rear finish mower and it can stall my tractor cutting my zoysia lawn when it is getting plenty of rain and in the thickest areas. Totally think you are over loading any finishing mower to do much of such cutting and while saying that I am using mine to keep a field of coastal bermuda mowed for hay growth. However, mowing about the six to seven inch height. If this is to be a lawn you are not helping your grass letting it grow so tall.

Having said all that, sometimes we are all pushed to use the tool or implement we have outside of it's design the best possible we can.

Ive owned the land for three years and brushed hogged it about twice a year. The land was mainly grass which scraggly over grown bushes spread throughout. THe brush hogging did wonders on getting rid of anything that wasnt grass and its all gone. Like I said this is a vacant lot that today actually my build started on the home. So really not concerned on a lawn appearance at that moment. Think through the summer Ill just keep knocking it down every 2-3 weeks to keep it up and to start getting a lawn like appearance.

Thanks this was a one off job, that frankly worked and by all accounts was free because of borrowed equipment. Just wanted to make sure I didnt buy a dud of a machine.

72" rear finish mower is not going to happen on a B2650 with any happiness. Been there, done that. Even my 60" gives it more than it wants...... Unless your mowing it every 2 weeks and keeping the pasture extremely maintained.... you'll not be happy. You need 5 PTO HP per foot generally for good performance. You have 19HP. See my YouTube videos of when I had the 72" and my new B2650. I also used it on my father-in-laws flat 4.5 acres and found it to be horrible. I sold it and got a 60". The 60" is workable, but less than optimal. I just have to keep it in low range and mow half speed most of the time.

My 60" brush cutter works MUCH better from a pto power perspective, but then the cut quality is brush cutter typical.... rough and with heavy windrows. I prefer the rear discharge and smooth dispersion as well as the smoother cut of the finish mower. It is what it is.... It gets it done. I didn't buy it to mow my yard, that is a side job for it in my case.
