Mum always said to wear clean underwear in case you had an accident and needed to go to the hospital.
[True story:] Whilst in the Navy I approached a group of Medical Assistants (Sick Bay Tiffies) having lunch at the Mess and asked if, indeed, it was SOP to check for said undergarment cleanliness?
After a brief, huddled, discussion they responded in the negative... nor, they stated, did the Nurses or Doctors check.
The next time I was home on Leave I relayed this information to my Mum asking, "Seeing as this was untrue, what other fibs have you told me?" She looked (up)((tiny woman, my Mum)) into my eyes, gave me a swat and said, "Do as you're told."
