I am doing the 1000 hour service for my hydraulic system and was told the trans uses 5W20 oil, not hydraulic fluid. When I
blew a line last year the hydraulic shop looked up my tractor and sold me hydraulic fluid. I just wanted to confirm that I am using the right products because it is Saturday and the dealership is closed.

My FEL recently starting losing power, operations that I used to be able to do at an idle now require raving the engine.

I think you had better check with owners manual to confirm. I dont know much about your tractor but, usually transmissions that are separate from hydraulics (like manual) have their own oil and oil sump whereas HST transmissions share the hydraulics from same sump. So HST usually will use hydraulic fluid...but manual can use different types.

Sorry I couldnt be of more help but please be sure you have the correct fluid before proceeding as this is the heart of your tractor. Your tractor may have two sumps-one for hydraulics which will mean hydraulic fluid and one for transmission would could be transmission fluid or oil.

No doubt cdaigle's page on the post above for fluids in your tractor are correct. By now there are plenty of dealers open to talk to on the issue. For my money do not ever put "engine oil" in your transmission. It might work but why in heaven's name try it ? AND many tractors use the same sump for hydraulic fluid for all purposes as is used for the transmission. My MF2660 is exactly that way with the 3pt lift pump, the main aux hyd pump and the power steering pump ALL using the same oil shared from a common sump. I do believe that is a common design feature and my first guess is that it is true for many brands and models regardless of whether they are HST or standard transmissions.

You can't use pure engine or hydraulic oil, this tractor must have wet brakes and you must use oil that work with such a brake system.

Premium universal tractor transmission hydraulic oil in the minimum. Like the above post says, wet brakes require the proper additive and premium universal tractor oil should be sufficient for you.

20w50 motor oil goes in most ZTR mower transmissions.
