Quite OK, my friend. I was just 30 & a bit numb from losing my own Mom only two weeks prior. That said, I might be among the luckiest of single Dads for sharing those precious years with a lad who practically raised himself. (Honor student, NHS, degrees paid of by 40, too) :dance1:

Oh yeah?? Well Michael doesn't shoot or hunt, ride motorbikes, or care much about trains, and I don't play golf (a family affliction I avoided) He got his most As in HS, I got mine in college. He recognizes people by their faces. I recognize people by their palms.

A friend's house had the toilet hooked up to the hot water... I never could figure out why.

Because he used the toilet before getting into the shower and got hot water for the shower faster.

Filling the tank with hot water keeps the tank from sweating. They even make mixing valves just for the purpose.

But if there is a long run between the hot water heater and the toilet, water hot enough to need tempering never arrives.

I need to replumb my toilet tank, even with a terry cloth cover, the thing sweats enough to grow mold. ;-(

Only place overseas the Bundys ever went was London on their way to Lower Unkton where Al and Bud, that last two remaining male Bundys were to be killed as a way to end a centuries old curse. Meanwhile, Marcy and Jefferson played at a 'fun' club.

While living in Anchorage - most toilets were plumbed with a mixing valve or straight hot water. Keeps the tank from sweating.

Nope. But I guess the question is why all these people seem to think they must unplug it. The mother in law with dementia I could understand, but apparently this is more widespread. Almost a compulsive phobia of some kind. When you do things that you know don't make any sense but you still feel compelled to do them, then that is a problem.

Back in the 1950's and 1960's there were a number of fires related to appliances, like toasters, burning homes down and killing family members. The loss of life and property was so profound as to leave a lasting impression on those who experienced these things. It happened and it was common enough to cause people to unplug the toaster as a hedge. When faced with such severe consequences, the simple effort of unplugging the beast was a reasonable investment. Very much like those who change oil far in excess of requirements when the odds of something going wrong are near zero. We remember the problems of others.

I remember the wave of toaster oven fires when they first came out and friends of ours were one of them. I remember and to this day unplug the toaster oven when we are done with it. That 8 cent switch is a mechanical device and some can and will fail. Same with gas stoves. We don't have one but when we did I had the guys put a simple shut-off on the line at the stove. It took little effort to turn it off and that reduced the odds of an errant gas problem to near zero. Things that impact us in life get carried along for the duration. Many people still carry the baggage of their family going through the depression.
