In my opinion every house needs a pistol, rifle, Shotgun for personal protection. You should be practiced with all of them. Which ones I have is nobodies business. If I go crazy and threaten people, you should take them away from me. The Ar15 is the most versatile and cost effective rifle

Hard to argue with you here, Roy.

An AR-15 doesn't really differ from any other rifle. Its like the difference between tractors, some do things one way others another. But is also like a tractor in that you can bolt a FEL to the tractor, then you can bolt different buckets, hay spears, forklift tines, grapples, etc to that. And then there is the 3-point hitch on the rear that things not yet imagined can attach and be powered by PTO. The AR platform is that kind of flexible. And like a tractor an AR is not too pretty to get dirty.

I got one simply because I wanted to understand the platform.
I've since assembled a few more.

I suppose the biggest advantage an AR holds over other semi auto rifles is parts availability.
Especially magazines. They're everywhere.

I guess it's a sport in itself.. I wanted to understand the platform before I went out and bought one. From responses here and reading elsewhere I don't think it's for me.

Building them I have no interest in, I have a bolt gun in 223 and like shooting it. Sounds like they are good for hogs which I wont hunt. I have been reading about them lately and considered buying one because they may be forced to stop making them at some point IMO and if I wanted one now would be the time. I'll probably buy another older high quality bolt gun in a caliber I don't already have..

Thanks for posting..

I understand more now! People shoot around here all the time, we'll be sitting on front porch and I'm thinking pop, pop, pop, pop, $5,pop,pop,pop,pop,$10,etc.
I'd have to say my favorite for the money is a single shot 12 ga. I shoot from the hip, a nuisance ground hog, 00buck, it never knows what happened. For protection someone breaking in that would work also.
I understand for sport use, but where do you draw the line with capacity? 50-100 rounds?

I bought a .22WMR Ruger revolver for my 73 year old wife (concealed carry), last year.
She loves it, and can EASILY manage it!

I did the same thing for Sharn Jean!

FWIW, I used to enjoy shooting 3-gun Matches. Never was very good, but boy did I learn a lot. A match would consume, IDK, 300 rounds between the AR platform rifle, pistol, and shotgun? Also did action pistol matches. Lot's of rounds consumed in practice.
So people around would probably ask "what the heck is going on across that mountain? sounds like a war!"
