Notice that few like the nostalia of the original (issue) triangular foregrip.

Those original ARs were so prone to the dirt of Vietnam,(Unlike the AK) that soldiers would ask family to sent them cleaning kits!

fun to work on, modular, and the same reason to have a couple other rifles or a tractor, or really anything else, because we can.

I get all that, I buy things I'm going to use, If I have a use for something I buy it.. I was looking for a good reason for me to spend money on one, haven't heard one yet.. An AR in 22lr would be fun so I'll look into those..

A friend had one of those cheap Bingham .22 AR lookalikes in the 80s. Cheap, white metal and terribly unreliable. It had the trianglular forestock.

A have some very old pictures I should post of firing a friends AR-10 in 308. That was quite the toy.

I always wondered if the .22LR conversion kits worked reliably.

I have a couple thousand rounds through mine. It’s a CMMG brand that goes in the regular 5.56 upper/barrel. All you do is replace the BCG with the conversion one. The kit came with 3 25 round mags. Have not had one problem with it yet.

Know anything about the M&P 22?

I own 30 plus guns, half hand guns and half long guns... No Ar's for me. I don't really see the benefit for what I want. I guess my FNH Scar 17 is closest to an AR, it's black, deadly, semi auto, and real mean looking. Personally I like my lever action long guns. I do have a good friend who is an AR fanatic; he owns a few dozen...

Draw the line with the "nut" holding one, not with the gun or it's capacity...

Folks that aren't a nut, they won't kill someone no matter how many rounds their gun holds!

Remember when we had nut houses? Obummer closed them down, see how THAT is working out for us?

I agree 1000%! That's the whole thing in a "nut-shell". We had a local mental hospital and knew a few staff members (nurses, etc.). Many of the severe cases were castrated. I know that's not politically correct but that was a good thing! The patients had proper care, they even had a working farm. Those places were and are necessary.
They started releasing patients into society, a disservice for them and society.
As you mentioned that's the key. Reinstate mental facilities, early detection of unstable individuals, and I can't see any redeeming qualities of violent video games.

Know anything about the M&P 22?

I’m trying to think if that’s the one my father in law has or not but I’m thinking not. He called his a carbon-15. Looks like the m&p is all polymer just like the one he has. It’s extremely light and easy to maneuver. If light weight is your goal this is it. If you want versatility then I would get an AR15 (aluminum receivers) and put the conversion in it. Or get an AR15 and then a dedicated 22lr complete upper. Whatever you get, get plenty of magazines.

Regardless which you choose it will be fun.

I have known enough gun nuts in my time. Sure many plink away at all kinds of stuff, few ever hunted for food. Yet, some yearned more to use their weapons for the targets they were designed and intended for. Some, just hoping they would get into some situation, where they could actually USE their military hardware. Maybe some just can't stand it any longer and go out and use them on their perceived enemy. I don't think that's a stretch.

Those are not gun nuts, those are nuts that happen to own a gun. If they are going to go off the rails and harm somebody they could use a knife, or a 2x4.
