Okay so what exactly do I want to buy, a 5.56 with a 22lr conversion? How much money we talking? What brand it good, reliable and doesn't cost $1000?

I'm not interested in Ford/Chevy fight..

Kind of outgunned when the Tyrant has laser and microwave weapons deployed from space. lol The AR is good, but not THAT good.

Oh, boy. This is a popcorn moment for sure.. Lets see now.. I have (had, cough cough) a DPMS. Swapped an old "sporterized" .303 Mk4 British and a little cash for it. Put some more custom money in it. But everyone has their favorites.. Thing is they are all pretty good, and mostly universal. An actual .22LR upper made just for .22LR will be a little more accurate than an ordinary 5.56 bbl with a conversion unit stuck in it. I had one of those " Colt green label CAR" units back in the day I bought for $700 and then the 94 ban went into effect, and a guy wave $1500 in cash under my nose so I took the money. The green label on the cardboard box signified that it was a genuine pre ban gun complete with bayonet lug. Like I needed a bayonet lug. The blue labeled ones were just fine without the lug and carry handle. The slick top was actually better for scope mounting vs. the stupid Leatherwood carry handle mounts we used to use. So I took the $800 profit and ran. It will be interesting to see what others say that have built an AR recently.

IMO...If you want a .22lr buy a .22lr...(like the Ruger 10-22)...you can pretty much make them look like about any rifle you can imagine...including a "Gatling Gun"...(google it)...At any rate if you want a .22lr buy a firearm that was designed from the ground up to shoot .22lr...

The AR15 is the modern day equivalent to the musket rifle from the late 1700's.

It is the reason the 2A was written.

God forbid we ever need to push out a tyrant or invading force, but if we do, you will want an AR15.

Militia works with regular army so it is beneficial that you have a rifle that military armory has plenty of ammo and magazine's for. Also, all parts except the fire control group are interchangeable with the M16.

In its base configuration, the AR15 is easily operated by most people over the age of 12.

It is a great all around self defense and sporting rifle.

It's a fun rifle to shoot that doesn't cost very much. When people come over that have never shot anything before, they all love the AR. There is almost no recoil, it's very comfortable for people to handle, and almost everyone can get a decent pattern with it on the target after a little coaching. Here, wild hogs are open to hunt all year long, so depending on where I am in the house, I either grab the AR, or my 30-06 when I see a hog or coyote. Both are easy enough to kill at close range, and I'm hoping to beat me personal record of getting 3 hogs out of one group with my 30-06 by having more ammo in the magazine when I run into a big group of hogs. Sadly, two is my current personal best with the AR, they are pretty quick and can disappear into the brush faster then I can get a good sight picture on them.

first one was purchased for 3GN competition. An inexpensive ($450) one..don't recall the brand at the moment, but a name brand.
Second one for NRA highpower competition. Rock River National Match AR - guaranteed half MOA. Heavy as all get out. Accurate too.

competition rules...while you can compete with other militiary style weapons AR's rule.

bought complete.

223 wylde - will shoot 556 or 223, 223 being more accurate and the civilian version. nobody shoots 556 except the military.

I get really really bored just shooting paper by myself at the range.

So I shoot in a weekly pistol league, PPC. Have moved from an off the shelf semi pistol to a specialized custom built revolver.

IDPA I shoot 3-4 times a year. any off the shelf pistol or carry gun will work. I've shot 5 different guns over the years.

I run teh cowboy action shooting at our gun club (SASS rules). I have 2 single action ruger pistols, a double barrel shotgun and a 97 winchester and a winchester 92.

The win 92 loaded with 357 mag is a formidable item.

While i'll shoot a varmint (ground hog, raccoon, etc) I've not hunted (went for deer one year..didn't see any).

I also have a garand for vintage matches, garand at camp perry. old and not as accurate as a modern gun (it's mil surplus afterall). It's from when men were men and they ate raw meat! LOL

I thought I would open a thread to understand the AR rifle.

I have many firearms but no AR's, lots of people have them that go to the range I am a member of, I don't see the need for me to purchase one at this point. If I use a rifle for some reason I use a bolt action rifle.

A few questions for people that have them.

1. Why did you purchase it?
2. Other than capacity what advantages do they have as opposed to a semi automatic traditional rifle?
3. Did you build you're rifle or buy it complete?
4. What caliber did you purchase and why?
5. Is the SW sport 2 Magpul MOE M-LOK a decent firearm?

I would buy one if there is something I'm missing that is important to me but so far I'm not seeing it.
I toured Windam Weaponry, pretty neat place..

I hope this stays an educational thread..

What scope?...Might wider angle, faster focus optics change your odds ?

I have two of these.. I guess I'm looking for an excuse to buy an AR platform gun that does more than one thing and does both well.. Don't know if that is even possible..

I would recommend the m&p for quality and value. I liked the one I had and I am very picky. They go on super sale alot at the big stores.
