I dunno.. they are kind of fun to shoot. The recoil forces are near non existent. As centerfire ammo goes, it is pretty cheap.

Oh... not that I would know of course... I lost mine and most of the rest of my firearms when I crossed the lake in a canoe that capsized.. Yep, must be at the bottom of the lake....
I need to find that lake, as apparently half the firearms in the US have been lost there. ;)

and like a tractor, which one is for you?

Start with what caliber would you like?
you have flat top and handle...and which sights for each? LOTS of options in iron, scope and red dot.
Adjustable stock or not, free float barrel? And then which stock, what barrel cover..mlok or ???
and what color do you want your furniture?
what length barrel? What profile? What material?
Trigger..stock ones are very gritty. The palmetto armory one is nice and on sale for $40 often. You can spend $250 or more on a trigger also.

My cheapie I put desert furniture on, red dot, palmetto trigger (and it's trigger went to my SW mp-15/22) it's light and handy.
My target rifle has SS barrel, A2 stock, 4X scope for competition, ambi bolt release, I have the 1/4 MOA handle/iron sights for it as well. and weighted stock.

SO many variations, option and such like it can be hard to know where to start.

Like a tractor, WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO WITH IT? is where you start.

The SW MP rifles are great all purpose/general purpose place to start. I have the MP 15-22 and love it, but it has limitations (too plasticy).

An AR-15 doesn't really differ from any other rifle. Its like the difference between tractors, some do things one way others another. But is also like a tractor in that you can bolt a FEL to the tractor, then you can bolt different buckets, hay spears, forklift tines, grapples, etc to that. And then there is the 3-point hitch on the rear that things not yet imagined can attach and be powered by PTO. The AR platform is that kind of flexible. And like a tractor an AR is not too pretty to get dirty.

I have a Colt AR15 chambered in 9MM that I carried on duty when I was a LEO. It is a model CAR 645 but I think Colt has changed the model number. I carried a Glock 17 for a duty weapon so ammo interchanged. Back then 9MM was cheap, a 50 round box was $5. I always bought 1000 rounds to get a discount.

The AR15 is fun to shoot. We have other long rifles, pistols, and handguns but everybody likes shooting the AR15. I added a 2X Red Dot scope. The gun is lightweight and with the stock collapsed easy to carry in a small case, as it is 26" long.

Okay so what exactly do I want to buy, a 5.56 with a 22lr conversion? How much money we talking? What brand it good, reliable and doesn't cost $1000?

I'm not interested in Ford/Chevy fight..

They are all pretty good. With some your paying for the name. All of ours have Anderson lowers except two. They also make a good gun and built here in KY.
The cheapest way is to build one. I would decide what components I wanted then watch for sales especially around Christmas.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO WITH IT?

I would shoot it at the range.
Use it to cut down on the use of other older more valuable rifles I have.
22lr would be a must.
Open sights, peep/ghost ring would be good.

I'm not going to shoot beyond 125 yards, mostly having fun competing with friends. at 50-100 yards. My eyes are good.
I have nice scoped rifles and calibers that I can shoot way out there but it gets expensive so I shoot them a bit and go to 22 WMR and 22lr..

I shoot my various .22s more than all of my other firearms combined. Aside from the cost, they are quieter and I can shoot them in my back yard, whereas I need to go up to my field for a better backstop good enough for my larger calibers. I also have shot more ruffed grouse with various .22 handguns over the years than with any shotgun. Ever since there was an ammo shortage I stock up as soon as my supply drops below 1000 rounds; I don't ever want to run out again.
Every time I read an article about the "Gun nut, with over 1200 rounds of ammo", I look at my supply and laugh.

Kind of outgunned when the Tyrant has laser and microwave weapons deployed from space. lol The AR is good, but not THAT good.
Probably a conversation for another thread, but I will say history has proven that a large number of individuals with small arms spread over a large area, can wear down armys even when the army has heavy artillery.

Iraq and Afghanistan are the most recent examples.

That also assumes the Tyrant can find enough followers to operate all those fancy weapons against their own people.

I thought I would open a thread to understand the AR rifle.

I have many firearms but no AR's, lots of people have them that go to the range I am a member of, I don't see the need for me to purchase one at this point. If I use a rifle for some reason I use a bolt action rifle.

A few questions for people that have them.

1. Why did you purchase it?
2. Other than capacity what advantages do they have as opposed to a semi automatic traditional rifle?
3. Did you build you're rifle or buy it complete?
4. What caliber did you purchase and why?
5. Is the SW sport 2 Magpul MOE M-LOK a decent firearm?

I would buy one if there is something I'm missing that is important to me but so far I'm not seeing it.
I toured Windam Weaponry, pretty neat place..

I hope this stays an educational thread..

Look at my handle....I am an avid shooter...I have shot competively many decades.

I have AR痴. There are two reasons

First, when the SHTF, I want the firepower they offer. I will always own some.

Second, when they are regulated, I have spares and i will sell them and double my money.

I am old and prefer to shoot more traditional firearms. But I believe having a battle rifle is prudent.
