As a resident of the wild west, I agree.
Sig . . . no person out in the wild, wild (well at least who I know) . . . will shoot a stray dog outright, unless it is doing outright harm to livestock, and yes if such happen with a child . . . there is no question.

Ok, I've read thru all these comments and have one of my own.

An older woman I know had a spitz that would bark at all visitors and she would tell the dog to "get him, get him". I tried to explain that she was encouraging the dog to attack them. The dog was known to bite and had bit the owner more than once with large and deep wounds. There was always an excuse for the bites and nothing was ever done. The dog had been abused by a previous owner as well, so the people are at fault in this case.

I also know of a family pet that was let out in the evening for a few hours to run. It joined up with a few other "family pets" to form a dog pack that went on a killing spree, mostly of wildlife. The Fish & Game wardens got picture proof and the family still denied that their pet could do that. I don't know what the outcome was beyond that.

As for stray dogs, we've had several show up over the years and one even became the family pet. Some have collars, some don't. In all cases, I'm cautious around them and am armed when I'm out. However, if they leave me alone, I'll tolerate them but won't feed them or anything else so they will move on. I'm sure aggressive dogs will disappear into the woods somewhere. If I know who's dog it is, I'll give them a call. I do know that dogs can be like kids and get away from you when you turn your back for only a moment, but I don't trust them.

P.S. if a dog (or any animal) attacks a child (or any person) I would try not to kill it. Primarily so it can be tested for rabies and the victim would not have to undergo that additional pain.

Come home and a dog that isn't ours is waiting for me at the door.

Just glad I don't live in the wild west with dogs where everyone has guns ablazing at any stray that looks mean. Going on 15 years without ever having to shoot a dog. Some people are lucky.

That said, it goes without saying that if some child is attacked by a dog without provocation, the dog generally should be put down without question. The issue is the concern doesn't become the person being attacked, but the dog breed.

Unfortunately, while pit bull type dogs only make up about 6.5% of all dogs in the U.S., they were responsible for about 66.5% (284) of all fatal dog attacks (408) in the U.S. between 2005 and 2017. Runners up were rotts (45)10.4%, german shepards 4.6% (20), mixed breed 3.9% (17), american bulldog 3.5% (15), mastiff/bullmastiff 3.2%(14), and husky 3%(13).

The point being, and its unfortunate, pitts have become the assault rifle of the dog world. Neither should be left unattended, in the hands of children, or in possession by a felon, mentally ill person, etc... that probably should be said about any dog large enough to cause fatal human trauma, but statistically, pitts stick out more than 6:1 over the next highest breed when it comes to human fatalities.

6 to 1.

If pitts were a firearm, they'd be recalled. If they were firestone tires, they'd be recalled. If they were airbags, they'd be recalled. I can't see a reason for anyone to logically own one, other than adopting one from the shelter out of kindness to live out its days in peace and not propagating the breed any further.

It all depends on a persons temperment and experience. I am sure that many people that have suffered livestock or other losses, would open fire on a stray dog seen on ones rural acerage. It shouldn't be there. And usually, by the time you get your gun, it's out of sight. So shoot first and ask questions later. Here especially, where guns and ammo have to be locked up (seperately). Also, 911 will chew you out if you call about a stray dog. Call the animal control and you will usually get an answering machine, and that's assured after hours or on the weekend. That doesn't leave a person many options to handle things "nicely"

it's an odd trait, (maybe trained by humans to do this), when a dog goes onto property that is not theirs, and attacks other dogs or people!. most dogs will not do that!. they will back off and run away when confronted!. it's not their property..

Yeah, but in the company of other dogs, he says to his pals. Hey watch this, I',m gonna go onto this property that isn't even my own and cause some trouble!

I don't disagree with you, and yet the OP per their opening comment stated, and I quote .... "The dad has shot at least one stray dog that came into their yard and has notified the neighbors that any dog that they do not know will be shot on sight if it ventures onto their property."

The family the OP talks about reminds me of people who live in fear...

Ironically I didn't point it out, but your source of info has kind of been shown to be biased.

A good read...

they could face a lawsuit for shooting someone's dog, and most people think of their dogs as family members, so they could face retribution from the owners, and how do you tell a young kid that a neighbor shot your dog?. UH OH.. a big pile of resentment!..

My only point is if you shoot a stray dog on sight on your property just because you're daughter got tore up by a stray dog, the person who shoots a stray dog "no questions asked" is just as bad as a person who let's their dog roam.

As noted, seems they're (couple whose daughter was bit) scared crapless (perhaps rightfully so) but still gives them NO RIGHT to shoot a stray animal on their property who shows no signs of aggressiveness IMO.

NOTE to none dog pople, barking is NOT a sign of aggressiveness.

I could of probably of shot at least 6 dogs living here. Perhaps a dick here to call someone out on a internet forum, but not really a dick in real life LOL
