Honda GX engines are top notch, treated right they will run for a LONG, LONG time. Commercial grade and they have earned it.

Whatever. In my case it puked and puked early in it's life. No more Honda's on this farm.

Sorry, but I call bull on that story.

So do I (call it BS). Sounds like Internet folklore to me. No rotating / reciprocating 4 stroke air cooled internal combustion engine will go 600K miles unless it's a commercial diesel, especially not a motorcycle.

BMW boxer engines properly cared for are known to easily reach 250,000 miles and beyond. The typical BMW motorcycle owner usually keeps his motorcycle for more than a decade and does his own maintenance. It is rare to ever need cylinder work (cylinders are Nikasil plated). The most frequent major replacement is the clutch disc. Typical maintenance items are brake pads, tires, fuel filter and light bulbs. The oil/air cooled boxer engine is also used in fire pumping service.

My 50s vintage BMW R50 had over 100,000 miles on it when I gave it away. My Triumphs could never reach 50,000 miles without an engine teardown and rings or pistons.

Nonsense. You don't know modern day piston engine design, lubrication, metallurgy and fueling technology. Rotary engines? They require frequent overhaul and repair.

Modern piston engines will last long hours if run at reasonable speeds, with quality lubricants, proper cooling and correct stoichiometry.

You do not need to believe me, you can check with a HUGE percentage of rental companies and contractors that depend on minimal problems from their air cooled engines. They know. Honda GX (not GC) is what you will see regularly because they are legendary engines.

Read the story in the link. I definitely call bull after reading it.

It was not planned but most fitting that we arrived at the 500,000 mile mark at the southern most tip of Africa

Isn稚 that a nice coincidence. Not only an impossible 500k on an unopened 1996 motorcycle engine, but he hit that mileage at exactly the southern most tip of a continent! Imagine that!

Sorry but this world and the internet is full of bs and false stories. 1996 motorcycle engine seals harden and wear. Piston rings fatigue at 100k. Valves and seals wear from combustion constituents. Itç—´ not a matter of magic oil reducing friction.

Youæ±*e free to believe this story, not this cat.

Your compression leak down may be the result of valves and not cylinder wear. Try a wet comp test. A valve job may restore compression.
I actually didn't say I have a compression leak but was wondering if it's a possibility that's what's causing the poor idle condition. Turns out it was the idle jet. I have yet to even check the valve clearance but thinking I might since the cover gasket is leaking oil

BMW Motorrad USA has verified the mileage on his bike. I'm afraid your'e just not up to date with air/oil cooled engine design and Nikasil cylinder plating. As for seals, proper oil formulations keep seals intact. BMW motorcycles simply do not leak oil regardless of miles. Piston engine service life depends on several things including lubrication. cooling and fueling accuracy. The Honda engines in question seem to have a loyal following and a reputation for reliability. Many of these air cooled engines also use oil jets to provide additional under piston crown cooling. I owned a Honda motorcycle that easily topped 100,000 miles with no engine repairs. It was water cooled however. There are CB 750 Honda motorcycles still running that have OE rotating assemblies. Heck, my B&S Intek V twin still runs like new and uses and leaks no oil. It is 11 years old and still uses the OE spark plugs believe it or not.

How many years was lance Armstrong, tested and certified by multiple agencies and countries, to be not doping?

You must be a member of the Flat Earth Society. So, don't believe it. Meanwhile, I ride my BMW GS air/oil cooled boxer powered motorcycle and know that it will never require an engine teardown in my lifetime.

BTW, the earth is a globe...its not flat.
