The excavator showed up. This is about an acre of clearing. About 35 trees mostly hardwood with a couple poplar mixed in. He’s got about 3 acres clear already. Now he’s giving me time to get them stumped and topped. These are done and ready for him to pile the tops and stumps. Have about this many trees to do on the other side of the farm.

 . . . excavators are so handy around one's land.

This is cheating, but a buddy of mine called me today and offered me half a log truck load of oak/maple. I haven’t gotten out in my woods this summer, so this was a nice surprise. The biggest one in there is 36” across, but most of it is nice size for handling and straight.

No wonder you call yourself Happy Gilmore !!! Not cheating at all - you still have to work it up into fire wood.

It is nice when you find a guy who is willing to work with you and co-operate interleaving your work with his. Not all guy's would do that. Job looks good too.

Yes it’s been nice. He’s a local farmer that has an excavator side business. He said he bought it to cleanup his farms, but has done 1,000 hours of custom work along with his 1,000 hours for himself. Cat 315L. Does a lot of clearing jobs. He’s got around 50 hours in this job so far.

Not cheating at all. I have been pushing customers to my local tree guy. I hope someday he will drop me some steeet tree hardwood or align me with it if I go get it.

It has been fun! It also saves a lot of time and mess when I'm picking up donated logs for our local firewood donation program

We don't have a program like that on this side of the state as far as I know. It sounds like a good way to help folks !!

In addition to my own land, I own some land jointly with 15 other area families. It's a conserved, working forest (can never be subdivided or developed). Starting in 2008 (about a year after the joint ownership happened), we started cutting an extra couple of cords of firewood each year to donate to a family in need in our area. Several years ago, it was expanded into a community effort, and named the "Monkton WoodBank". There are a couple dozen folks who have helped off and on over the years, and maybe eight or so "regulars". In a good year, we may do 10 cords. We deliver in our own town and in about 5 surrounding towns. Some of those surrounding towns are starting up their own programs. We work cooperatively: whoever has the wood and has volunteers available makes the delivery when a request comes in.

The two of us just finished cutting up the logs in that picture (plus a few more) down to 16" lengths in preparation for a WoodBank work day this coming Saturday morning. (I expect this one will be lightly attended, since we did not publicize it much in advance, but we don't have much wood to work up anyway.)

That's a nice surprise!

I've come to the conclusion that those really big logs are more trouble than they are worth to cut up for firewood. 30" is about my limit, and even then, only if there is something else about it that makes it worth dealing with.

A green 30" Red Oak cut to 16" long still weighs about 400#. I have a hydraulic lift on my splitter, but I wonder if it would lift the log or just tip the splitter over. I'll usually cut them in half with a chainsaw first, or maybe even quarter them.

That is why I always run my splitter in the vertical position, log is always on the ground... but that's me..

My back won't allow that.
