Right, in general situations. But the gun control topic is not something where you're trying to be kind with the opposition and 'bring them into the fold'. They are opposition and they are coming for your rights, unwelcomely, so they should be treated as hostile and held to the highest standard to make sure whatever they push isn't based on bunk and spread misinformation to the lesser engaged folks. There's really no way someone actively pushing for gun control is going to be 'converted' by folks being kind and understanding of their lack of knowledge on the topic.
If I were talking to a person in general about firearms, such as if they were expressing interest in the sport/topic, then I would be all for your suggestion. Correct them gently and help them know the right terminology so they can interact with others who are more well-versed. That's when you want to be kind and help them along the path.
