He told me I wasn't protecting my family to the best of my ability; that I was leaving our welfare to chance should something happen. After much thought I agreed with him. Took my wife and youngest son still at home and went to gun safety classes, then shooting classes, and finally concealed carry classes. The peace of mind that came from all of that is empowering.
I am glad to read that you did that. At the risk of repeating myself (yet) again, every right includes an equal amount of responsibility. Although permits are currently not required in this state, if I ever feel the need to CC I will attend a course. For now I don't see the need.

They are not required but you should have one anyway.. You don't need a CC to carry CC ME but you do need one to open carry, also if you get pulled over you do not need to disclose whether or not you have a CC weapon on you, if they don't ask you, you don't have to tell them, also with a ME CC you can go into some state parks while carrying a handgun IF you have a ME CC.. I will never give mine up, ever...

The irony. No coneal carry permit to carry concealed in Maine, but you need one to open carry. In NC, you need a conceal carry permit to carry concealed, but no permit to open carry.

Where is gets funky IMO is where having or not having a conceal carry permit affects how you keep a loaded gun in the vehicle if it's not on your person.

I'll call you and raise that we should all have the right to carry concealed in all 50 states; PERIOD. Why can I carry in PA and not NJ? The whole thing is ridiculous ... you either have the right, or you don't.

I'm 60 years old and the main reason that I own firearms is for hunting, other recreational shooting, and vermin control.(4 legged or winged.) For most of my life it's been illegal to have a loaded long rifle or shotgun in a vehicle; until recently, you needed to have a CC for a loaded handgun.
That's what I'm accustomed to, so if the laws have gotten more liberal I really don't care, it's an ingrained habit to unload when I get to the truck and I see no reason to do differently. If I ever do get a permit that may or may not change.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense..

I agree, each state has their own firearm laws, some foolish and some aren't.. Utah is reciprocal with Maine, how am I going to get to Utah while conceal carrying legally...

Yep...I travel coast to coast... I have an app on my phone that tells me what the law is in any particular state. I used to carry my Beretta 92 but that is "high capacity" for some states. Now I just carry my Taurus Judge with 5 rounds of .410 self defense loads. In states that are not carry friendly I unload and lock up gun and ammo separate so I am just transporting a weapon.

So what could happen if I decided to drive from Maine to Florida with a handgun? MA will put you in jail for one year without a doubt. NY, NJ etc would probably do the same IDK... As far as I know, I can't leave the state of Maine in a car carrying a handgun..
