Brought the splitter over to an aunt's house on Sunday. This is the pile for me to take home, next time I'm up there & when the truck bed is empty. This trip had the big wheelbarrow, saw, & fuel etc. Left her about a cord, which will last her the winter. Someone else cut it to length & stacked the rounds over a year ago so it wasn't too bad of a job. I think there was some elm and the rest was maybe cherry? I needed the muscle (aka the Mrs.) to help get the base rounds up on the beam, largest was a little over 24" in diameter and wet since they were sitting on the ground. I think I picked up a couple carpenter ant bites, man they weren't happy. Usually I split when its colder, so they just fall out & onto the ground. But it was 70 degrees or so & they were crabby.

Got any more pictures of that roof/cover & framing? I'm getting ready to build something over my mill, looking for ideas.
It's built just like you would a pole barn, just adjusted for size, for this need,

I over built the rafters a bit, because at some point it's going to get a electric winch put up there... I milled out the 2x12's to lam up the beam,

standard.jpg

to have a 26' door opening. It went up easy even though I did it myself,

It's been getting built in stages, and it's about to get another "stage"! lol

Me too I even bought the winch and thats as far as I got when I got a price of a 12' I-beam, north of $500.00, so considering making one out of different laminated wood, glued and screwed.

Thanks, looks like on the first pic on your beam you laminated it with some 3/4 plywood( normal), but in the pic with you putting it up, looks like just 4-2x12's..
I'm thinking my door will only need to be 18', my saw will cut a 16 footer and I don't anticipate going any longer.. and I also want both front and back open, I load on one side and unload on the other..

I also want to make a little "room" at the head end of my saw for a cover of the head and storage for.. who knows.. plus it will give the structure more rigidity.

A beam is MUCH stronger if you glue/screw/nail 3/4" CDX between the layers of solid wood...

BTW, I have the winch bought for mine too... lol

I understand that, I've built lots of beams/headers.. just didn't look like it in the pic where you were installing it.

Whatcha using the winch for?

My guess is like me, turning big logs, sometimes a peavey/cant hook/cant dog is to much work.
