Sounds like a wonderful place to live. Around here, they ask to be called and respond quite rapidly. DNR police. County police. City police. Tribal police. They all respond fast and professionally here. Can't say enough good things about them.

It's an incredible place, thank you. Only 3 miles of paved road, 2000 acres, 16 families all know each other and call each other first. I had some looking into my windows, behind closed gate, 1000 feet off the road. So I called the sheriff and he said, "I'M ON MY WAY! I'll BE THERE IN 20 MINUTES!" I called my neighbor, just like he suggested years ago, and my neighbor was here in under 3 minutes with a 12 gauge. By that time the perp when out the backside of the property with over a mile of UTV trails only.
It's a wonderful place here. We are our 911 collectively.

Ummm, the guy is baiting your hunting area for you at zero cost and effort to you. Your odds of seeing and/or getting a deer most likely go up. Think outside the box. Deer just don稚 show at a bait pile. They have to travel.

In other words... the guy is breaking the law, but you're gonna benefit from it, so ignore it.

Food plots are non-baiting

Yes, food plots are not considered baiting, unless you do something that manipulates the crop causing the grain to become scattered outside of normal farming practices. You can hunt a corn food plot but cannot dump corn in that food plot or chop the corn down and scatter the corn. And it is the hunters responsibility to determine if an area is considered baited or not.

25 Dove hunters found out the hard way about baiting a few years ago. Landowner was having issues with people trespassing on his land and hunting doves, so the landowner broadcast wheat into wheat stubble which is legal. The scattered wheat attracted the doves, which in turn also attracted the illegal hunters. which resulted in fines for hunting over bait, hunting doves without permission, some got fines for over limit, and one guy even got caught two days in a row. All had their illegal doves confiscated and some even lost there hunting rights for 5 years, as well as having the shotguns seized by the state.

The arrest and other fines came out in the paper, and I know the landowner that scattered the wheat and then called the conservation officers on the illegal hunters.

In my opinion, the bigger issue is that since he is willing to break the law about baiting, what other laws will he or she be willing to break?

I have less issue with someone hunting to feed themselves (with little waste) , regardless of laws, than someone that does it legally for "FUN".

OP here.

That's my concern too. It's an insight on the integrity of a new neighbor. I probably won't turn him in- it's not worth starting a range war over. I assume he's got a game camera up there somewhere so he now knows I know and he may not be so blatant.

Food plots are not an issue here. It's up in a heavy woods.

If I was ever aware of the term 'baiting', I'd forgotten it. If I could have searched that term myself, I woulda missed this good discussion.

You can always put a game camera up on your side of the fence that's obvious for him to see. That might keep him "honest"
