Yeah, sliding doors have their own set of problems. I've seen that with a few neighbors. Tracks get full of junk and makes a it a real pain to slide a heavy door. If they get full of ice, then what?

I made swing doors on my junky shed, but as I rebuild it, I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Hanging the track inside where it would be out of the weather might help.

I put in 10 foot tall insulated garage roll up doors on my shop, installed electric door openers. All is good, they are practically air tight and the foam insulation helps with the heat /cold so my shop stays warm in winter with very little heat input and it blocks the heat from the sun entering in the summer. I can work in it most of the time with just a shop fan and stay pretty cool.

You could go ahead and make a 8' slider and just make a "wing-wall" pocket for the door to slide into...from one side it would just make the building look bigger than it is...the wing wall could offer some protection from the elements for whatever might be stored behind it...

Or be one end of a lean to.

I've seen lots of sliding doors with tracks that extend beyond the building. A simple knee brace is all that's needed. That said, I've had enough experience with sliders that I wouldn't have one. For a few dollars more, an overhead door is much better.

I agree. When we had our barn put up, the contractor said that the price difference between sliders and a garage door was negligible and he recommended a garage door.
