Cast iron cooking on electric stove

My wife has one of those flat cook tops. She likes it, I don't. It seems to take longer to heat up and I have better things to do than wait. I don't use cast iron skillets on it and don't think she does and I am afraid to slide a pot of popcorn around on the top.

It was an older "Spectra", a friend gave it to me and I've been too cheap to upgrade until I had to.

For my new Frigidaire induction range I wound up buying a 12 piece stainless steel set of Tfal pots and pans,$99 at Walmart. Nice set, works on all types of ranges.

So far my gas range beats anything else I've ever tried. Costs nearly nothing to use vs. electric.

I just wish it had a smoother surface than the standard grates. Glow coils or a similar system would be nice too at the burners to kill gas flow if the flame goes out.

It has been a long time since I had cooked on a gas range. I really liked it back then. I suppose that they have safeties built in? Curious on why you would prefer a smother surface though. Is it a clean up thing?

Originally I would love to have had a gas cooktop but with wife and her asthma, there was no way. So I went with induction. Almost the same as gas in many respects, VERY fast and excellent control. I am pushing it with a wood stove and have to be very careful. Now that I have had induction, there is no way I would have gas. Just my 2 cents.
