What?.... You never removed a stud?

Dale

Yes,many times but when I have cleaned and lock tited them it is not a pleasant job.
If I am going to have to remove them why replace bolts with them.
I can clean threads and use lock tite on bolts and if I can get my impacts on them remove them with less work then studs.
The only time I see a benefit to studs over bolts is for alignment and on something that gets routinely removed and reinstalled,
or if using jam nuts for adjusting purposes.

So, let's wait and see what Tori finds out from the dealer. Could be interesting!

I think she's right in not driving the thing at all until the bolts issue gets cleared up.

I spoke with Agco at length today, they were very helpful. It is indeed an issue with the bolts - they are the incorrect length. They should be 40mm thread length, whereas the ones on my tractor were 30mm thread length. This seems to be an isolated case, they haven't been able to see anything in their global workshop system thingy. However, they are investigating comprehensively, and are checking to see if other GC series tractors here in Australia have the same problem.

The 1725M is being picked up tomorrow, and taken back to the dealer. There are 10 bolts affected, that will need to be replaced with the longer bolts. For the 4 bolts that have stripped out a portion of the thread, AGCO suggested they could install slightly longer bolts - 45mm or 50mm threaded length, if there is enough thread to do so. If not, they will helicoil the damaged threads and then use the 40mm bolts.

They are very sorry this has happened, and are very motivated to fix the issue. Of course, I did send them links to the Youtube videos . . . which might have hastened their response? Anyway I'll be glad to have the tractor fixed. They are going to throw in a bit of merchandise and a grease gun etc, and I will be asking them for extended or lifetime warranty on the affected parts (those threaded castings).

AGCO asked me to take the Youtube videos down, which I understand, they could be quite damaging to potential sales. I'm inclined to keep the videos, and make the listing non-public - so that this forum still has access to the information but that also won't be too damaging to AGCO long term. Any advice on this? Another alternative is to make it a good news story, should AGCO get the tractor fixed up quickly and effectively, it could be a good story of a dealer/manufacturer supporting a client when things don't go as planned.

What do you guys think is best?

Static pictures uploaded to and stored on forums like this are always better. I thoroughly despise videos and the sites that 'host' them, especially those known to be owned by spyware companies.

For now, since they have stepped up quickly and acknowledged their issue and are working to make it right - there is no harm to you in making them private (not viewable). Your initial purpose in publishing them was for our information and advice, which you received and which appears to be moving toward a favorable resolution. AGCO is acting in good faith and I think hiding/removing the videos shows good faith on your part as well.

Yep good tips. I'll make them unlisted videos. That way, it's still a reference here. Re the spyware - it's possible to set up your browser/PC to not let Google track you, and still enjoy Youtube. I find it a great resource, and have learned a lot from it over the years.

Them stating they will correct their error doesn't change the fact they committed the error to begin with. One of the few things I hate worse than videos is kowtowing to corporate pressures and demands.

I am the guy who suggested studs.
First, I would absolutely discourage the helicoil repair. These are never as strong as original. Typically they only repair the first 4-6 threads. That is not enough to replace the durability needed here, and the most stress is on the first couple threads, which must support the load as well as clamp the component.
Second, Lou is 100% correct in that it becomes difficult to remove the component if studs are used. My concern was to take advantage of ALL of the remaining threads. There are a couple other options.
Pick a bolt that is ~1/2” too long. Screw it in just snug, until it bottoms out. Measure the distance between the component and the underside of the bolt head. Now, select a bolt of the proper length, (or modify-cut off) the bolt your are using. Add a lock washer and you have a bolt that is very nearly full depth, but will still tighten up and provide maximum clamping force.
Another variation on this theory is to use a cap screw with full length threads. Pick a length an inch too long. Screw on a nut all the way to the head. Add a lock washer, then install this bolt assembly until snug. When it bottoms out, tighten the nut. Now you are using every available thread, not subjecting the cast threads to “pull and twist” plus you can easily remove this “stud with a head” if the component needs to be removed.
Of course, the best suggestion was to replace the cast gearbox, which replaces the damaged threads.

If one is worried about spyware stay off the internet and disconnect your router /modem.... There are so many ways to track you the only way to eliminate tracking is not go online to start with, but if you're reading this you have already violated the cardinal rule already about maintaining your privacy.... You best defense if good fire wall, and DO NOT post anything you do not want made "public"... Privacy statements by "internet" companies are a joke....

Ever look up a article like maybe a "baby rattle" for new grand baby... Almost instantly there is 28 sites trying to sell you a baby rattle....
