Is this a scam? Is the dealer pulling my leg? Extra transmission gear needed for open station L6060?

Kubota L6060HST
I have an L6060 already ordered and being assembled by my local dealer, who called to inform me they forgot to add a part needed to operate the mid-mount PTO. The claim there is a $250 gear that needs to be added to the transmission for it to work, which costs about 14 hours of labor at $100/hr. They are offering to supply the part for free, and only charge me $1,000 for the labor.

I asked why? since this model (L6060) comes with a mid-mount PTO standard, why would an extra part be needed? They claimed the cab models include it, and it needed to be added to the open station ones.

To me it sounds like he is pulling my leg to get some more money back for the other discounts the already provided during the purchase.

What are your thoughts?

Why do you need a mid pto anyway?

I'm planning to use it for a front-end snowblower.

Did you order and get a bill of sale for a tractor with a mid-mount PTO?

Yes, it is listed as: L8387 MID PTO on the invoice.

I found this post which seems to explain it is needed for ROPS models: L6060 Mid PTO - OrangeTractorTalks - Everything Kubota

The part needed is an L8316 MID PTO INTERNAL GEAR KIT.

Looks like it was an honest mistake, not an attempt to reclaim any discounts already provided.

Bingo.

The internal shaft needed to install the (approximately) $600 optional mid PTO is NOT standard equipment on the open station L6060 (it is on cab models). Installation of the shaft after manufacture requires a very expensive split, resulting in a unit that I would not want in any case.

Your dealer should have known this and it is his mistake. Note: Your dealer is not the first to make this mistake.

Tell your dealer that you want to order a different unit with factory installed shaft. You should not pay for his mistake.

You ordered a tractor with mid PTO. You were invoiced and paid for a tractor with mid PTO. Now the dealer wants to charge for installing it? It sounds like he made a mistake on the order or you are receiving the wrong tractor. Of course you may have to wait while things are sorted out. You may even need to contact Kubota corporate.

Honest mistake or otherwise, the tractor with factory installed shaft is considerably less expensive than is the tractor with expensive dealer installed shaft.

Tell him that you want a different unit with factory installed (much less expensive) shaft.

Yes you will need the internal gear. It is crazy how Kubota omits it from the bigger Grand L's with ROPS and yet it comes on the smaller Grand L's. (It's included in all Cab Grand L's. Been like this since at least the Grand L30 days)

If you ordered the tractor with Mid PTO from the start, the dealer should have known it was needed. The information is clearly called out in the wholegoods order info. If they forgot to order it that way, the part should be on you and they should not expect any labor to install. Their offer should be the other way around!!!

Good luck!

Added pictures of the wholegoods pages for reference, so one doesn't need to jump to the details I posted in the reference link in Post #6 above.
