My ~60' poplar tree has giant leaves on top and tiny leaves toward the bottom, looking up the tree the leaves almost look the same size until the top ones fall and they are 4x the size of the bottom ones... doubt that translates into oak land but some observation, the shade thing above makes sense too.

I get some giant leaves here too as well, not sure on the species.. I'll try to get a couple pics.

They might be Basswood.

Basswood has HUGE leaves, and in an emergency, it is my go to tree for leaves if I have to make a #2 bathroom visit. In the winter I head for a beech ridge, because beech keep their leaves on the tree even in the winter. They are small and yellowed, but they are there for use.

So here's some pics, didn't have a ruler with me sorry.. The top leaf.. the tree it was on has a trunk about 1 inch diameter is all and about 10 feet tall.
And what the heck is that last one?? It has bigger leaves higher up I could not reach.. seems like some kind of oak. And yes that is the trees bark..

View attachment 626612 Not sure, kinda looks like tulip poplar?
View attachment 626613 Not sure
View attachment 626614 Looks like my black/red oak leaves, the indents go close to the center spine
View attachment 626615 White oak? indent aren't as noticeable & the points are rounded.
View attachment 626616 Looks like the typical red/black oak?, but it looks to have been eaten by bugs or something.
Hmmmm

The top one is a Yellow Poplar , or a Tulip tree as they call it here in the south.. ALWAYS has a flat top and same shape regardless of size.. AND quite a bit smaller leaf size

That bottom one was a little torn from me picking it, here's a better example.. with a tape.. almost 14 inches top to bottom

The top two pics in the original post are leaves from the same tree, one was just off the ground is all.

One up from the bottom on OP definitely looks like a red oak to me.. still pointy and the one closest to my thumb had a point if you look at it close.

I cut wood today, but I probably should not have.

When you see the animals lining up in pairs, you know it has rained just a little too much. I had grand ideas of pounding out some wood, but that was quickly dispelled when I could not even stand up. Everything was wet and slipper, even the trees would not stay in the chokers. I counted on one twitch 8 times I had to get in and out of the cab to put a twitch together. One tree I put a choker on 5 times by the time it got out of the woods.

Everything is mud...everything. I came home for lunch and stripped naked and go redressed for the afternoon. No all my muddy clothes are in the wash.

The skidder found traction, but from the bottom of the hill, to the yard it was nothing but soupy mud. Every third twitch I would have to file my saw because the mud dulled the chain so bad. About the only thing good that came out of today was the wood will fetch a higher price.

For those that care; I got out about five cord. That is enough on a day like today!

5 cords isn't a bad day anyways. "Back in the day", when most cutting was done with a 2 man skidder crew 100 cords/week was a good week.

regarding what Broken track had to say that top leaf is definetly not the leaf to use due to the hole in the middle.

Ah, but if you make a 3 ply tissue with them, you're good to go.
