Just changed hydraulic fluid and filter in the MF1540. Calls for 8.2 gal, which slows about 3/4 of the site glass. No movement on the loader or hitch. What am I missing?

Just a wild guess here. Do you perhaps have an optional rear remote valve, with detent, installed on your tractor? If the valve control has been bumped to the detent position inadvertently, that might be what's interrupting the other functions.

No, no remotes.

I just read an old post where the guy had the same problem (same tractor). The resolution was to use compressed air in the fill tube to force fluid… I wasn't so lucky.

Did you fill the new filter with fluid?

Seems The compressed air idea would only work if the machine was running- that way the pump is running.

No, I did not fill the filter.

The tractor was running during the compressed air experiment…

disconnect the pump output pressure line, use a shop vac to prime the pump, then run it a few seconds with the line going to a bucket.

You may be overestimating my abilities… I'm already regretting attempting my own oil change.

I don't know for sure how your Massey is set up,
it is common for the filter to be on the suction line going to the hydraulic pump,
some pumps will have two sections some just one, usually the suction will go in the bottom of the pump,
remove the line leaving the pump and going to your loader valve, use your shop vac to pull on that line till you get oil,
once you have oil drawn thru the pump place that line in a bucket, then tie that line down securely and start your tractor,
once it starts you should have good flow, shut down and reconnect, top of the hydraulics to make up for what gets spilled.
I would not run the engine till I had pulled oil thru the pump those pumps do not like being run dry very long.

Thanks! I'll give this a try tomorrow. Do you suggest I also add oil to the filter? I've seen this recommended in a few different threads.

To clarify, disconnect the line at the pump or the loader valve?

Which ever is the easiest, at the valve will give you a hose to stick in a bucket.
If the filter hangs down vertical it might help if it's horizontal it is hard to do.
