I think you guys just like to complain a lot, and not do anything about it.

Welcome to the internet! First day?
:D :stirthepot:

-- please don't be offended, my comment is more about keyboard warriors on the internet than you. ..and I've been guilty too.

Location, location, location....

1350 square feet. Taxes would be a tad over $1000 per year. We have a home equity loan, which qualifies as a mortgage. So we get a homestead exemption that brings the taxes about in half to about $500.

You also have to remember we are near South Bend, IN, where the property values are dirt cheap on this side of town. Indiana also enacted some new tax laws where property tax can't exceed 1% of home value. So, $100,000 house = $1000 property tax max.

The money has to come from somewhere, if not property taxes than something else. Police/fire/other government services are relatively fixed costs, regardless of property values.

Curiously, what's a homestead exemption, and why does having a mortgage make a difference? Never heard the term before.

You can tell by a guy's post count, if not heavily diluted by back-pats and attaboys. btw, I like what you're doing about it, and that you offered no admonition to those lousy __s. :)

In MI a resident can claim the $1k 'exemption' for school tax, but that only is available if part owner of the property (mortgage or not) and one per person, at that. Not for renters, and not until a land contract is fulfilled and deed signed over accordingly. (__ didn't say he had a mortgage)

That is a load of carp, you going along with socialist policy just because some socialist lawmakers duped the public and passed a bad law. You and everyone on here should outraged by the laws in that state. Unbelievable what is happening to this country with this oh-well-thats-the-way-it-is attitutude. Everyone should be pissed because this type of thing has a way of spreading from state to state as lawmakers take up new policy and with big city socialists on the rise they can carry elections for a state.

Nah, but (some of us) our point is that this was a very RARE scenario, if we're to believe the facts as laid out in the story. There simply has got to be more to this situation, since normal people don't lose their property over $9 bucks. It's not like it's some giant abuse of power in Michigan. This is a pretty normal state in terms of that stuff, honestly.

Yes, this is an extreme case, but many people routinely have $100,000's stolen by the gov't when they only owe a fraction of what is taken.

Here's the first page of that 121 page link I posted to Berrien Co, Michigan. The column on the right is what they owe.

Even if the amount owed was 1/2 the money received at auction and the state or county keep it, it would still be theft in my mind.
Sounds more like tactics the mob would have used than the government of the people by the people!

I see 6 listings under 10 dollars and a total of 16 under 100 dollars out of 25 on just that page. Not sure but that does not seem like the exception to me but more like the rule.
If you condone taking someone’s home and keeping the remainder for less than a hundred dollars I would love to hear your conversation with your God when you try to talk your way past the pearly gates without success!

I would expect my County to balance it's books. I would expect them to fulfill their obligation to settle tax debt in a manner described in their laws.

Several years ago a property owner in my County decided the government was evil and quit paying his taxes. He owned 160 acres with an Earth Contact house. He stood his ground. So did the County. His property sold on the Courthouse steps for half it's value. The whole process was justified in my mind. I felt no sympathy for the owner then and don't today. I'm not a bit concerned about those feelings when I face God.
