Family Tradition

   / Family Tradition #72
I never, ever borrow a man's tools or equipment.
If it breaks I have to buy him a new one.
THEN, give back the very thing I couldn't afford when I borrowed it.

If a neighbor wants work done, we work out a solution involving the owner/operator in the seat.
Otherwise, even if it's family, if you can't afford to hire out the job to a contractor
or rent the tool, you can't afford to do whatever it is you wish accomplished.

Life is simple.
Don't complicate it with your wants, needs & desires of whatever it is your neighbor/brother owns.
It's written down somewhere in Some Book about something called coveting.
Life, nor manklind, hasn't changed much since it was Chisled on that Slab.

This happened to me today. I drove 45 minutes to get to my farm to find my brother using the front end loader on my tractor to load my log splitter into his friends truck. His friend wasn't too happy when I get on the tractor and unload the splitter explaining the splitter doesn't leave the farm without me. Friend gets all huffy, talking about how he drove 2 hours one way to pick the splitter up.

Holy cow! Your brother that it does not sound like can be trusted is loaning your equipment from your farm to someone that lives 2 hours away that you do not know. Wow! I would say that brother would not be allowed on my property again without me there.

I would be setting brother/son/cousin/whomever straight in no uncertain words

I have to agree. The brother should be the one getting the scolding. And when his buddy complains be real clear to let them both know your equipment requires your permission to be used. And then when the pal left I'd tell the brother again!

Your bro's buddy has a right to be pissed, just so long as he's pissed off at the right dude: your bro.

In June I dropped my woodsplitter off at my sister's place (120 miles away) so that my BIL could use it, with the understanding that I would need it in September. It had been my father's, so I felt that we should share it; besides, he's the kind of guy who is **** about things so I wasn't worried about getting it back. I'm now splitting my wood with an 8 lb sledgehammer. The woodsplitter is in the woods at his SIL's place so that I have no way of getting it. I could raise a stink but would hear about it for years; if I ever get the thing back, it's never leaving my property again.
