Family Tradition

That is a tough one, especially if you borrow things from them also. It is much easier to saw no even to family if you never need to borrow their stuff.

I have a brother that was always borrowing from everybody, even me. I finally said no when he wanted my log-splitter.

One reason I said no is because him and his wife both have great jobs and spend money of big motorcycles quite often and every other form of toy you can get. He was never responsible in the loaning department.

Take a front tire off every time you finish with it and put it somewhere they cannot get to it. That might not be applicable here but I did hear of someone doing that on a smallish machine.

I typically let my brother use my tractor but one day I blew the front tire and walked it right off the rim. I didn't have time to fix so I yanked the key and went to work.

Hours later I get a somewhat angry message from my brother why I took the key, did he do something wrong?

Me : " Nope it's so nobody takes off with the tire off the rim"
Him: " I didn't even notice that"
Me: " Yup, that's why I pulled the key"

Yesterday, the same brother took out the neighbors'(uncle) garage door delivery some freshly milled wood.

RollTideRam, you ought to appreciate this response considering your moniker.

When you order the new tractor let them all (those who always borrow) know: "The TIDE has changed. You've always borrowed my tools, but not this tractor. My new policy is 'You buy it, I'll borrow it' and let's see how that works."

I remember hearing that all frustration comes from unmet expectations. So, make the expectations clear at the start. Have them all for dinner and state that things HAVE to be different with the new tractor. State that ONLY the "owner" will be the only operator (liability, insurance, ...). Tell them that there are 2 options. 1) All (or some) go in on it and are equal owners in the purchase and REQUIRED $ for yearly maintenance and upkeep. All owners can use the tractor. 2) You will put out all the $ and be the only owner and operator. You will help (being the operator) with their projects, as they will help you with yours, but that non-owners can not use the tractor.

I also always remember my mom saying " Never borrow anything you are not willing to buy and never lend anything you are not willing to give away".

Nowadays, someone might take you up on the offer!!!!!
Which is why i said you might not want to try this with family, they might just accept.

Just let them know you will be the only operator of your new tractor. You can decide when or whether you can help with their projects. Period.

The key removal may sound good but lots of tractor keys are common to models. Unless you specify that the tractor is not lent out this problem will continue.

I've never removed the key from my tractor. With your thoughts, I guess it wouldn't do any good?

I always remove my tractor key, why make it easier to steal.
