What to do with old gas cylinder

They seem like a pretty terrible shooting target. A flat piece of steel angled down will controllably direct the rounds into the dirt. A round target is going to ricochet everywhere.

Truth to this, bullets will ricochet off of round steel very easily.

If you do not know what was in them do not attempt to cut them. Acetylene gas can remain in there, not sure about Oxygen cylinders what they are like to cut. The only ones I know 100% for sure you could cut would be Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen tanks and at that make sure they are completely empty. I recommend an abrasive wheel in a grinder, sawzall blades will just skip across the steel.
I would take them to a gas company for disposal or to ask them what you can do with them.

Be certain they are empty before de-valving. I've seen the outcome.

Get them re-certified & fill them.

1950 is not that old of a cylinder. Do they have a name stamped into the cylinder neck? Many that size are leases only.

The 70 year old one doesn't have a name on it. Some of the other ones do.

All of them are empty now, none seem to be acetylene. I have cut two of them in half - on in the video and another that didn't seem to be in the best shape. Two of them were missing their vlave so they are definitely empty. One had a valve that appeared to work, and seemed to be empty. I took the valve off. The other had a valve and some residual pressure. It was labelled as "Oxygen" so it seemed pretty safe to let it bleed out.

Get them re-certified & fill them.

Thats not a bad idea. One of them still had the steel cap and valve that might be a good candidate for that.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I buried some. Valve opening up, in concrete. Then welded 6"pipe on the shoulder.
Makes a really strong and lifetime cornerpost for fence.
I'll look for a picture.

Make then into giant wind chimes... Some people love the deep tones of huge chimes in their gardens, and can bring some big bucks (not deer)....

IF you were in driving distance I would take one off your hands...Old Acetylene cylinders are only exception many were packed with Asbestos to absorb acetone to hols acetylene in suspension.. Those cylinders are considered hazardous material...

Cut in a 2 foot length I made this gong from a cylinder. It makes a deep " gong " sound when activated. Visitors seem to love her. Birds also nest in her wire formed hair style. Three iron pots fill with flowers also on the stand.

Have a picture but unable to attach.....

So I finally made it into a wind chime and it sounds great and it was windy enough the last couple days to listen it out in my field. Even though its literally more than 200 yards away from my house I can hear it. Its pretty cool. Its funny, my wife hated it at first but then when she heard it she liked it and wants to move it closer to the house.

I made a video about making the wind chime if you want to see it.
