Yeah that is typical. They convert at 3/16-1/8" between gage and fractions. 1/8" is about 11 ga, but some will say 10, some will say 12.

The thickness also varies by type of metal for the same gauge. Here's a link to a set of charts for some of the most commonly used metals. Note that 1/8" does not match any of the gauges except for stainless steel.

Thanks 3Ts that is a very fascinating read into history.

I did notice a pattern that is a, ummm, (engaging over simplification logic mode) what someone with a small amount of patience for details / or digits to the right of the decimal point (smirks)..... Could start to say..... If you round up to the tenths or "if you have to use the hundredths - it does show that '11 gauge' can generalize (quite sloppily) to a 0.125 inch

/End silliness mode

In all sincerity, I think I finally found a Rosetta Stone for metal thickness "for my brain". Thanks y'all.

Yes, that's true depending on the sloppyness factor. The 11 gauge is commonly used for 1/8" stuff, but a true machinist would not be happy and shims would have to be used - again, depending on the application.

11 ga steel is so close to 1/8" that there is functionally no difference. At least none that matters. Since we are talking about tubing, it is often structural and that means it is just welded to itself and other members of the structure. Nobody cares that the wall section is technically off by 5 thou from some arbitrary number... It does what it is intended to do. Besides with tolerances, it could actually be that thick.

New Tractor & Backhoe means a NEW DOLLY! Based on my original design posed back on page 3, and some mild changes... No bucket pins I could "grab" with some basic angle iron, so a more complex "landing pad" had to be designed. New backhoe is 1100lbs.

Roll it right up to the tractor, not top-heavy at all.. rolls well...

where a bulk of the weight sits.

Fun stuff!
