I am updating my log spliter with more power so yesterday I was welding the nut on the bottom of the hyd.tank 1/2" nut. I used mig and 023 wire and 75 25 mix, today I cant turn the bolt all the way in so should I cool the nut when I weld another on? There no bbs that's stopping me I think the heat did something to the nut being small.

Run a 1/2" tap through the nut.
When I weld a nut on to some thing I put a lite coat of anti-seize on the bolt and screw it into the nut then weld the nut in place

I do the same with anti spatter spray.

Anti-seize or anti-spatter, and run tap through nut after weld cools.... Run a tap through threads is my usual go to fix after any welding on area that is threaded... Had not thought of actually having bolt in nut during weld, but I can see its benefits...

I always put a long bolt in the nut while welding to visually assure angles.

The bolt also assures no spatter on the threads.

Welding the nuts tends to get them a little out of round. All info above is mandatory.
